My 2002 360 Modena won't get out of idle. When i press the accelerator pedal, the engine revs up only a very small amount. The ASR light is on, small red light is also on in the dash (I think its the F1 indicator) and i have a small amount of oil leaking from the engine. Not sure if all of this is related. I don't drive it much. Could it be some safety that is engaging that wont let me rev up the engine? Could it be old gas? Need help

Is the idle smooth? How familiar with diagnosis and repair of cars?

Could be simple, could be not so simple. Sounds like its going to be a work through. How long was it sitting? Are both fuel pumps pumping? Is the check engine light on?

The simplest answer is get it to your mechanic.. and might be the right answer as there is only so much we can guide through on the internets... but we'll try.

The idle is smooth. Starting is slow. I have to let the starter turn the engine and press the gas for about 10 seconds to get it to start. I am fairly good with mechanical repiars, but i have never worked on a Ferrari. The nearest official dealer is about 6 hours away and the nearest Ferrari mechanic is about 1.5 hours away. I would like to try and get into the repair of my car for basic items, and only go the mechanic for the most serious stuff. It has been sitting for about 2 months. I don't run it much. Last fuel up was about 12-18 months ago. The engine light is on yellow, but i recall it always did that (at least i think). There are several things it is doing that i don't recall seeing before. There is a small red light (like a hood open symbol? or maybe transmission shift symbol?) it is in the bottom area of the speedometer dial. Also, when the key is first turned, but before i start turning the engine, it makes several high and low pitched beeps (about 4 times). Is this the ASR of warning? I am not sure how to check if both fuel pumps are running.

    OK...
    1) How new is the battery. Probably the number one issue with 360's. If there is any doubt on its function.. replace it. Many of these issues could be related to a battery going bad. (To replace its at the bottom of the passengers feet.
    2) Sounds like a few things going on. The little red light square with the angle coming off it is the F1 light. If the engine light is on (yellow) then by all means plug a OBD2 reader into the plug beneath the dashboard beneath the steering wheel and get the codes that come up. This will help diagnose it. If the F1 transmission light comes on and stays on, I'm sorry but an SD2 diagnostic at a Ferrari dealer or repair shop will be needed to know what the system is thinking. I suspect a lot of this is just from not being driven unfortunately... As far as the fuel, yeah it is very likely bad with water in it if 6 months to a year old. The beeps usually indicate a hood or rear engine cover are open. At least the switches think they are open.
    3) re-fuel pump- if idle is smooth then I'd think both fuel pumps should be working.. output though.. hmm..

Starting shouldn't require any pedal. Try turning the key to position II and wait at least 10 seconds before starting the engine. This gives the ECUs a chance to perform the self-learn.

If the check engine light is on, there is likely a trouble code that could steer you in the right direction. Any good OBD2 scan tool will probably help.

The "small red light" you referred to could be for high temperature (oil or coolant) or low oil pressure (you mentioned an oil leak).

Battery could be the problem as well. Long periods of non-use can kill it even on a battery tender.

Battery needs to be fully charged

Did you disconnect the "master" battery terminal knob while it was sitting?

Either case the ECUs need reset

    Its in the owners manual:

make sure ac and radio off

turn off disable alarm with fob

    put gear in N

turn key to II position 30 sec , turn off, turn key to II position 30 sec then look for OK to show in the "multifunction display"

let car run about ten minutes

engage in gear drive then turn on ac and radio

Ive learned this procedure while looking at 575 s that have been "sitting" too long, the battery level plays havoc with the electronics if not fully powered or has been turned off

Throttle Position Sensor fault / failure would be my second guess. Although the car should rev, but poorly in that case.

    Neil,

You really need to get a code reader and pull the stored DTC(s) to have any hope at a meaningful diagnosis --- the trouble code(s) will be invaluable.

I had something very similar to this happen to my 360 twice, and it was a bad battery both times. On one, the battery wasn't old, and intitially tested fine. My 360 was sensiitive to battery issues. Might be worth a try.

Try disconnecting the battery and putting the two wires together that is the negative and positive for 10 sec that does a hard reset on the car. Had a dead battery once and after replacing it the car did the same thing had throttle body faults tried reset with scanner didn't work. Tried re adaptation on throttle body's and didn't work then I diconected the two polls of the battery and with a wire I clamped the wires together they do not have to touch the battery posts or you will fry something

    Fly-by-wire throttle

Electronic Throttle position sensor is a likely culprit.

Have you had it on a diagnosis machine?

Thank you all for the detailed help and my apologies for the silence on my part over the past couple of days. I was out of town getting a gift for my wife - a Maserati Gran Cabrio. I will begin trying some of the suggested things on the Ferrari this week.

The battery was old and not keeping a charge so i changed it but the problems are the same.

Thanks Again - any suggestions on what to try first on the above suggestions would be fantastic.

You really need to get the codes from the car. Generic OBDII scanner can get engine codes, but codes from other systems require SDx or equivalent. Did any of the warning lights go out with new battery and proper reset procedure?
