Hi I have a 360 with aftermarket exhaust and NO challenge rear grill. Man, it gets hot back there. I was thinking of wrapping the exhaust pipes (2 each side) between the aftermaket SS muffler can and the exhaust tip assemblies with fabric header wrap tape. Has anyone done this? Did it work/help? Recommended?
The heat isnt coming from between the silencer and the tips. The heat is radiating from the headers and cats, and thats what should be changed out.
I did it on my AP high flow cats to protect my carbon air box; http://m1135.photobucket.com/albumview/albums/dcintron145/Snapbucket/973EBBA7-orig.jpg.html?src=www&action=view¤t=973EBBA7-orig.jpg&src=snap-postshare?pbauth=1_N63Ok4Ehusndh1h3YMYz2d1ZxFp3NNtixsDrtdqQl3vsvlKGOOcFNCaRrS904SLAZphqp%2BLw3DV8f9Y%2FcF%2FMcGzf3Xd31o0PoZe%2F4J6sc%2BySDk8fm9KMTf%2FVsZzff%2FAtJndd%2BVVVIMly%2BwXC8U%2BvmbsIoCFM6VF0BQM1HXWzGt4AXyf31fYq8ChJew99Ja%2FnkGpfQvgc36SDF%2FmXQT%2FfLA%3D%3D
How well is the wrap working? Any temp readings, etc...? I too just installed AP headers, Kinetix High Flow CATS, FabSpeed muffler with tips and no challange rear grill. I have not had the chance to drive much... cracked rear rim and I live in FL. I was thinking about a wrap, now it seems that something is required. I will take some temp readings when the car is back on the road.
Interesting that there are several threads about engine bay/header heat concerns. Wraps, fans, etc... One poster suggested air scoops in the bottom tray... That sound like a good suggestion to allow air in, up and out (with or without Challange grill) while moving and to some extent when stopped by natural rising heat. I will be looking into doing this as it is simple, no moving/electrical parts, etc...
Unless it is a track car I think that they are trying to solve a nonexistent problem. Sure there is heat but it isn't that bad if you aren't running all out or in a very hot climate. Time will tell. I can tell you this about scoops in the bottom, it will cool the compartment. I drove the car with the bottom tray off once and I couldn't get it warmed up despite the hot day. I will also tell you that the handling is VERY different without the down force. I would not add vents on the tray because it will kill down force and make your car even more loose than it tends to be naturally. The 360 spent a LOT of time in a wind tunnel making it work well. Even minor changes can impact that flow/balance and make the car very dangerous. Not worth the cost of a rubber hose in my opinion.
Skidkid - Good points!! I live in FL and this will be my first summer there with the 360 and the new exhaust. I have a IR Temp reader and will check the temp often to get an idea as to how hot it gets in there. Heat did not seem to be a problem (stock exhaust) in VA, even with track time. Thanks!!!
Back in 06, I got a Tubi exhaust for a F430, something I was concerned about was heat build up, as the whole Ferrari=Fire stigma was ripe at the time. My mechanic that installed it suggested I should get some heat indicator stickers, as they in display maximum temperature acheived, rather than the exhaust having time to cool down after a long blast. You can position them around the engine bay and they are really good, only trouble is I am not sure what range we used. http://temperature-indicators.co.uk/acatalog/Industrial_6_Level_Mini_Strip_Indicator_Labels.html This is the kind of thing.
