i don't know if ford is fleecing people just like ferrari is, or if these silly stripes really do cost many thousands to get right, but the MSRP of the body stripe option on the 2005 Ford GT is apparently $5,000.

and they don't have the USD-Euro problems to contend with, so i assume the actual effective cost is nearly identical.

    fwiw,
    doody.

LOL, I'm sure that stripe costs all of $20 to put on the car :)

i obviously can't comment on the GT stripe (nobody can yet), but i've seen Dan360's CS with the stripe and it is indeed a very very impressive piece of detailed paintwork. it's not $6K or $5K or even $2K impressive in my book, but diff'rent strokes and all that.

When you order the stripe, you not only get the stripe but a good amount of clear coat over the entire car. This is very evident when you put 2 cars next to each other. The depth of the color on the car that has the stripe is very evident.

Is it worth the $5500 is up to the buyer. I love mine.

huh - VERY interesting data, albertl. a ton of extra clear coat is definitely worth something.

Thanks Doody - :) Its like the world's most expensive pool-ball.

IMHO its great, the smile quotient as I walk up to the car is worth the cash.

I've only seen one CS with the stripe (it was awaiting delivery). The stripe was indeed beautifully and skillfully done. But the clear coat had bubbles in it.

I would have been pi$$ed if that had been my CS!

I would assume that the CS's with the stripe weigh in a bit more with all the extra clear coat.

At $5 to $6k, I doubt its a money maker, it takes a ton of labor an no one wants to talk about the cars that get "flubbed" and have to be totally re done. All things considered, I doubt F car likes doing them. They do look great in person. I would order the option in a second. On black it is really killer.

A friend of mine, who runs a local "high end" paint and collision shop that is held in high regard in this area, saw my car and knew from 50 ft away that the stripe was painted under the clearcoat and not a decal. After inspecting it, he explained to me that the stripe, with it's three colors, would take a great deal of time and labor to do and guessed that the option would cost "at least $5000."

If you have not seen the stripe in person you have no idea of how nice it looks. In my opinion it "makes" the car.

a cheaper alternative....but obviously not the same:
last year I saw a red 360 Challenge car at a track event that had the identical CS stripe but it was done in vinyl. cost him about $300 installed.
again, not the same but it still looked really nice.
I guesss that if you buy the car for all the $$, you can afford to go for the stripe!

I think that volume is the key question. Ferrari's stratospheric costs can partly be explained by the low industrial quantities they run. Their cost structure must be a joke compared to the benchmarks of the auto industry.
And then, they have to make pretty margins to finance their F1 team.

I saw your postings on the Ford GT web site.
I have been researching these cars also.
I was just quoted $250K for a Red with white striped car that the dealer has coming but has not sold yet.
Have you heard any pricing other than the hilarious price of msrp around 149 which no one is selling them for.
This is actually the first dealer who quoted a figure. Every other dealer is holding auctions for them.
Hey 5K for a stripe. When you are up pver 150K, whats the big deal. No worse than Ferrari.
I am tired of the hype and want to see the car.
My friend nelieves that these things will be obtainable at msrp in a year and a half.
    What have you heard?
In the meantime I am still looking for a perfect 550.

i agree - it's time for the hypestream to be replaced with some actual real cars so we all know what's what.

i've done the research on completed ebay auctions - and very few slots have actually sold there (well less than a dozen) so far. and they all have sold for $40K to $50K over. nobody's going to get 250 or 300 per car. that's just wishful thinking at this point.

although it's been suggested i'm too close to the problem, the more time i spend poking around the GT community local and online, the more i'm convinced that there just isn't that much demand for this car. once they get the first few hundred out (3-5 months, with ramp-up) it'll fall off precipitously.

the only thing that could keep prices propped is if the dealers getting cars each buy one themselves. so dealerships that'll get two will only have one to sell. but i don't really see that happening either - at least not to the 50% mark, never mind the 80% or 90% mark.

no matter what, these cars are going to depreciate just like a 996TT or a 360 after the 420 ships or any other non-rare ~$150K car.

time will tell. i just wish they'd hurry up and start getting some cars out.

    doody.

I just stopped in at my local Ford dealer again who said they would be getting a car and brochures. They initially said they would get the car before the brochures. A new salesman accosted me at the door and when I asked if the brochures were in yet, he said No. He then said "you know the car is going to be 500K". I could not help but laugh, and told him I already found one for 250K ( and it included the stripe, what a deal) but thought that was about 80K overpriced.
I just want to see a car so am looking for the next close auto to see just how trick the car is.
In the mean time, I am still looking for a 550 while I now start an architect on adding more garage space.
    It never seems to end.

That's classic. One thing at least with the F-car sales guys I've met is that they mostly don't treat you as completely stupid.

It may be that there are enough stupid people out there so that some of these dealers get away with 300K plus. But I see these as less valuable than a 360 purely because of numbers. I think there will be some Euro/US arbitrage since only 100 cars are going there.

Not that luggage space is a very big issue, but even with the uncompromising nature of the CS its perfectly useable as a daily driver and weekend with your wife car. I don't think that the Ford really achieves those aims.

I'd be interested at 150, but no way at 250.

    I totally agree.
I would definitely consider one (Ford GT)at 150K, but would still want the 550. I can jsut see my wife driving the 550 to Publix grocery store and having some 80 year old in her 6 ton, 30 year old detroit sled throwing her door open into the side of it. Is that enough to make you cringe or what:)

I saw a really good video review of the 360cs on a BBC show called 5th gear. Mmmm Vicki Henderson is cute! they claim the CS stripe is an additional $3k pounds. Whatever that works out to in USD sounds about like 5k?
