In summary, it was quite a lot of hard work to do it 'right'. I didn't find a single company that could do the 'brembo' stickers right, nor could any of the existing re-painting services achieve the exacting specs/quality I wanted.

In the end it took on average around a day per caliper to do all the prep, stickers, painting, etc. In total around it took around 4 days of work to get a perfect job including fitting, removing. A lot of effort but very happy with the results which when I compared to the original calipers where close to indistinguishable plus no horrible stickers left on the calipers which could fade, crack or melt. Entire thing was done in just paint and lacquer.

    Thanks man!

    Just for completeness the VHT Paint codes I used where;

    For the Caliper body;
Code: SP738 - VHT YELLOW BRAKE CALIPER & DRUM PAINT (x3)

    For the Ferrari lettering;
Code: SP734 - VHT GLOSS BLACK BRAKE CALIPER & DRUM PAINT (x1)

    For the Brembo lettering;
Code: SP731 - VHT REAL RED BRAKE CALIPER, DRUM & ROTOR PAINT (x1)

And finally for the Caliper lacquer; [after repainting - before oven baking]
Code: SP730 - VHT CLEAR GLOSS BRAKE CALIPER, DRUM & ROTOR PAINT (x1)

I baked them for 1 hour at 93 degree's. This VHT paint is perfect for calipers, its heat resistant to 900°F (482°C) and won't chip, crack, fade or rust even under extremes of operation or road and weather conditions.

Thanks. Glad to see people interested in some of my more OCD moments. I could not believe the number of times I had to try to get the transfer stencils exactly the way I wanted them. Its so much harder working with very small vinyl, in the end I found the perfect way was to weed the letters out using a small pin under a magnifying glass used for viewing circuit boards ;)

definitely enjoying it tbh.... im doing a similar type build with an ///M car which owned from new.... im going through everything to get it exactly how i want it, its a z4///M which has now been supercharged, everything from brakes to suspension has been looked at and everything has been done to the highest standard, right down to the magnesium wheel nuts...
admittedly its no 16M as i cant afford these type of cars just yet, she currently sits @ 460-480rwhp and is very special in everyway to me.... certainly "my" idea of perfection, or nearly... Quite abit to go but im pleased with it....

your car reminds me of the effort, time and money that ive plowed into mine, the feelign is pretty awesome isnt it when your out on the road.... how about some up to date pics of how she stands right now??

BTW i also live in the Uk, west midlands region :)

    Caliper Refurbishment - Brembo CCM's - Part 4

Now we have refurbished the body of the caliper itself, its onto the pistons and seals. These can be a common fault on the CCM brakes since they use nickel coated aluminum pistons. If the surface gets damaged the aluminum corrodes leading to seized up pistons and poor braking performance.

Firstly, the pistons, just like the calipers are made by Brembo. The bad news is that Ferrari do not sell the pistons or the seals as a part number at all. They only sell complete calipers. The good news is that Hills Engineering have stepped in to fill the gap and have manufactured drop in replacements!

Also of note is that pistons used are the same exact specs (commonly shared) on both the 380mm CCM's (as fitted to F430 and Challenge Stradale) as well as the 398mm (as fitted to the 430 Scuderia and F430 Challenge) calipers. So you can buy the same kit for the Scud as you can for the CS (Someone needs to let Hills know that they work on the Scud calipers and 430 Ch calipers too ! ).

Here's the full specs (just in case you can convince a Brembo re-seller to sell you some pistons and seals.. just don't mention its for a Ferrari - I'm confident they are shared amongst many many different calipers that they sell! ;)

    Piston 1#: (Smallest)
    Diameter: 30 mm
Height: Piston Body : 29 mm
    Piston Crown : 4 mm
    Total: 33mm total
Weight: 51 grammes (complete, excluding seals)
    Material: Aluminum, nickel coated.
    Seals: 2 seals per piston
    Qty: 2 (per caliper)

    Piston 2#: (Medium)
    Diameter: 34 mm
Height: Piston Body : 29 mm
    Piston Crown : 4 mm
    Total: 33mm total
Weight: 64 grammes (complete, excluding seals)
    Material: Aluminum, nickel coated.
    Seals: 2 seals per piston
    Qty: 2 (per caliper)

    Piston 3#: (Largest)
    Diameter: 38 mm
Height: Piston Body : 29 mm
    Piston Crown : 4 mm
    Total: 33mm total
Weight: 73 grammes (complete, excluding seals)
    Material: Aluminum, nickel coated.
    Seals: 2 seals per piston
Qty: 2 (one per side of single caliper)

Total number of pistons: 6 pistons per front caliper.

As described, Hills engineering sell a refurbishment kit for both the pistons and the
seals. I don't know the weight of their pistons.

    Here's the links to them.

6 x Stainless steel ground & electro polished pistons.

    Rear Pistons kit (of 4)
    http://www.hillengineering.co.uk/catalog/bcp360csr-p-380.html

Note: This Hills Engineering pistons are direct replacements for the original
Brembo design. The biggest difference is materials used which are CNC machined
out of corrosion resistant 316L Stainless steel. The original parts where
lightweight aluminum which where nickel plated. While lighter these have a
problem of corroding if the nickel plating lifts or gets scratched, resulting
    in seized pistons.

    And the rear caliper specs..

The rears are 4 piston calipers. The rear calipers and discs are shared (common) across CS, F430 and Scuderia CCM's. (*only the front's differ, not the rears which all use 350mm x 32mm CCM's)

    Piston 1#: (Smallest)
Diameter: 38 mm - Shared size with FRONT calipers largest piston.
Height: Piston Body : 29 mm
    Piston Crown : 4 mm
    Total: 33mm total
Weight: 73-75 grammes (complete, excluding seals)
    Material: Aluminum, nickel coated.
    Seals: 2 seals per piston
Qty: 2 (one per side of single caliper)

Total number of pistons: 6 pistons per front caliper.

    Piston 2#: (Largest)
    Diameter: 42 mm
Height: Piston Body : 29 mm
    Piston Crown : 4 mm
    Total: 33mm total
Weight: 87 grammes (complete, excluding seals)
    Material: Aluminum, nickel coated.
    Seals: 2 seals per piston
    Qty: 2 (per caliper)

Note: *actual piston diameters given are 0.05 mm smaller to allow precision fitment. (only useful if you plan on CNC machining your own pistons.). They are hollow in the center.
    e.g. a 42mm is 41.95mm, etc.

Another long time thread lurker popping out of the woodwork to say what a fantastic project this is! Loving the attention to detail and the effort you are going to! Looking forward to a car weight update and some of your latest pics!

Out of interest, will you ever sell this car, after doing all this work or will it stay with you forever?

Forgot to mention, also fitted Steel braided uprated Goodridge brake hoses all around too. The part no. is 27004-CB for anyone thinking of ordering them.

In the UK I purchased them direct from Goodridge, you can call them on +44(0)1392369090. They cost £63.96 + VAT and shipping. Total shipped price was £82.15.

These fit both the CCM's and Steel's.
