Back in the 70s and early 80s Ferrari did not have a lot of development cash. Considering this, how deep does the 365/400/412 DNA go? Are most oily bit exclusive to this run? Chassis, suspension?

My understanding of the mechanical evolution:

365GT/4 2+2 has the same mechanicals as the 365 GTC4. Chassis stretched, suspension similar

400GT has a bored out engine (GM automatic availible as well). Chassis same, no splined hubs (I don't remember when the air suspension came in)

400i (series 1) Same but with Bosch fuel injection instead of carbs. Chassis same

400i (series 2) basically unchanged (I think the chassis and suspension are the same)

412 bored out a little further. (I think the chassis and suspension are the same)

(other details, such as cam profiles, compression, perrifferals, etc. changed as well throughout)

    Regards,

    Art S.

    Minor additions:

The rear suspension changed from self contained self leveling shocks to hydraulically operated with a cam driven pump and lots of additonal plumbing (including accumulators). I'm familiar with this becaue I had to replace my accumulators.

ABS brakes were added to the 412 which included different wheels with a different offset.. It also had a raised trunk profile and changes to the bodywork below the rear bumper.

You'll know the accumulators are shot when you go over a bump and it feels like the back wheels are bolted to the frame. It will sound like a pile of 2x4s laying in the back of a pickup going over train tracks. In other words, you'll just know.

The bad news is that the Ferrari part is around $700 each x 2. The good news, you can adapt a MB part for around $250 complete.

The two pictures here are the original part on the car and the MB part. You have to make a custom bracket to hold the MB part and an adapter for the top fitting.

Thank you for the info. Do you closed on of the two hydraulic holes (sorry for my english) on the accomulator and used the orignal layout or do you changed it to the new layout with two pipes ? Thank you

I plugged the side hole and made an adapter for the single top hole.
Here is what my adapter looked like.
I started with an AN fitting. I cut the AN part off and threaded the hole for the banjo bolt.

Is it possible to eliminate the self leveling suspension and just swap over to coil overs like the series 1?

Good question. That would certainly be an easier way to deal with it in the long run!

edit: a 400 is a stroked 365 (78mm vs 71mm), same 81mm bore though. The 412 is an over bored 400 with an 82mm bore.

Maybe create a post with what you do so it can be searchable. Include lots of pictures.
