My three-month project with 18277 has somehow become three and a half years now and the self-induced agony still isn't over..................I've hit another problem, this time its the diff.
Does anyone know whether these early 4:3 diffs were Ferrari original or perhaps composite parts from other makers ?
I pm'd the Canadian master yesterday but he's on well-deserved vacation and may well be in an F-Chat-free-zone !
The frustrating part about owning one of these cars here in South Africa is that nobody's ever seen one, let alone worked on one, so there is simply no local knowledge to tap into when you need it.

what is wrong with the diff? ANY diff can be rebuilt. Even if shafts (crank shaft example in vid) are badly worn you can use thermal metal spraying techniques to get them to the original measurements.

The same goes for gears. A lot of companies specialise in revitalizing gear sets. All other parts like bearings should be available at the specialists.

I'm afraid its a bit more serious than that, more like a transplant so will need an organ donor....

Thanks Fritz but was wondering if we could do the job from locally sourced parts.
I guess the answer is then that the diff components are all Ferrari originals, shame because somebody down here made the suggestion that these parts might have been made by Alfa Romeo at the time. And there are plenty of old Alfas down here to work with.

Mike, ask yourself what Alfa-modell could have handled the torque of the V12. That would really limit the options don't you think ;)

If I were you I'd contact Eurospares for used parts and keep a daily eye on ebay.

As I said, it was ONLY a suggestion. You must forgive us down here in darkest Africa, we're not nearly as bright and sophisticated as you Europeans. When my F-car was built, Nelson Mandela was a prisoner on Robben Island, it would be another 17 years before his release. Those long dark years fashioned an extraordinary breed of motor mechanic, the sort that learnt how to make do with the materials to hand.
I am aware that my final option is to buy a replacement from Eurospares, I have looked on their website, noted the prices, added a nominal amount for freight, import duty, VAT etc and am not afraid to admit on this forum that I simply cannot afford it.

Long story, way too depressing for a Saturday evening when the Boks have just whooped the All Blacks in Port Elizabeth, but I need a transplant.

Sounds potentially interesting, at the right time, of course!

Too many dropped clutches at 6,500 rpm to get a good smoking jump off the line in drag races, eh? Did it make a big bang or did it just come to a slow graunching and grinding halt?

I once had a differential eat itself up in my vintage racing Turner because my mechanic forgot to refill it when changing the oil. He was pretty embarassed to see me being towed in from the far side of Virginia International Raceway. Fortunately we were able to locate a spare Sprite differential and get it changed and I only missed that one session on the track.

Hope your story is interesting. At least you can get some value out of telling it in the bar!

Did you know anyone with a CanAm Firenza down there? It was a Vauxhall Firenza with a GM V-8 stuffed in it. A guy I knew in the late 70's had one and brought it to Belgium. He got tired of re welding the front sub-frame so he built a custom one out of SS and fixed that. He was partner in the South African exhaust franchise, maybe you know of him. The car was fast as the wind until his wife totaled it!

p.s. Sorry FChatters for the diversion but I could not help myself with the history of alternative cars in South Africa at that time.

No need to apologise Ken, I for one am always fascinated to learn what gave these extraordinary motorcars their unique muscular edge.

Seems the origins of the diff in some of the mid sixties F-cars is pointing toward ZF.

This from Daniel Jordan: In 1966 the 275 GTB was re-introduced with a four-cam version of the V12. Six Webber carburetors aided in delivering around 300 horsepower. To cope with the new power, the GTB/4 was given wider tires and a ZF limited-slip differential.

Much later we seem to find confirmation that ZF LSDs were fitted to the 412 and possibly also some earlier 400's and maybe even my own 365 back in 1973 when it was built.

South Africa has had a long love affair with high-perfomance BMW's so maybe we can start pillaging old junk yards to see what we come up with.
