Did not meet reserve at a final bid of $34,000.00. This car has appeared at at least one other auction in the southern US, and also on ebay. And it's all over the internet. http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_detail.cfm?LOT_ID=FL0109-77319&entryRow=81 Has anyone seen it in person?
I thought you might chime in on this thread. I'm a fellow Canuck and I've been lurking a bit, researching the possible purchase of a 365 or a 400 5-speed. They both seem to be hard to find, but also don't seem to be moving at all when they do hit the market. Can you comment on the PPI you did?
I'm a bit surprised it didn't make reserve at $34K. If I recall, the owner was asking C$39K last Fall (which if I'm calculating right is around USD$32K?). Looks like a great buy to me.
Thanks for the replies! Pedro, when you say owner, you mean the car was on the market privately before gentry lane picked it up?
My interest at this point qualifies as "market research"..... and I would hate to waste your time. I'm looking for a usable/drivable investment for my 40th birthday (in quite a few months time. ) A close friend/mentor has done very well with F-cars, first a 275, then more recently a 246. He kept the first for 10 years or so and the latest for even longer. He has been able to use and enjoy them both and not had to suffer depreciation. I've also has a serious weakness for E-types for some time and am considering one of those. So, is $34,000 US not enough to buy a solid, driveable, but unrestored 365 GT4 2+2? or is Gentry Lane holding out for someone with more monet than brains
David, Shiny paint does not equal good condition...Look at the interior. I suspect that the PPI found mechanical imperfections as well. Regards, Art S. PS. Brian, brown isn't necessarily a negative.
I bid on the car and did not meet the reserve. I called the dealer and they wanted 40K USD, I offered 40K CD (about 38.2 USD at that time) and they said no way. That is when I found out about Brett and had him do a PPI. I'm glad I did not get it!
the car has strengths and weaknesses...but out of respect for Jon at Gentry Lane i can't just post the results of a private PPI here, sorry. anyone who wants more info can call me though. Jonny042, i think it will be very, very difficult to find the car you've described (solid, drivable, unrestored) for $34,000 USD...not impossible, but what do you get for that ? low compression, a dodgy gearbox, rust ? your investment stragedy could backfire... the problem is they are so undervalued already at that price, comparatively speaking. they are 50% more in Europe. a mechanically identical C4 is three times the price ??? IMO, it is simply a matter of time...of that i have no doubt. the rarity, beauty and practicality of these cars will eventually have it's day...
My experience mirrors Jim's. I also registered to bid on the car while it was offered through World Wide at Hilton Head. The auction house called me late, just when the bidding reached $35K U.S., which was my walk-away point. I know the bidding went higher and I had assumed the car had sold. The bidding, however, must not have gone high enough, though. I think the seller is holding out for $40K U.S. and is not in need of any liquidity, so he's holding firm. Personally, I think the color combo is attractive, but a conversation with Brett is mandatory for anyone considering this car.
Brett, the respect you show should be commended. So..... I commend you! You also seem to have good taste. As for finding the perfect car for 34K, I 100% agree with you. But one needing 5-10k of "detailing" should not be out of the question? The appropriate strategy in my mind is to go upside down on the car, invest more than it's worth, but have it to enjoy, since you obviously cant go out and buy a decent one at any price. They simply aren't out there because it makes no financial sense for them to exist. Does anyone agree with me or am I simply insane? PS - I like the brown but I'm sure it does not have universal appeal. Would it sound suitably exotic if you knew how to say "root beer brown" in italian?
Here's a link that shows the car at auction in Hilton Head.... http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/chassisNum.aspx?carID=15715&iDNumID=6369
Jonny, Rootbeer brown or chestnut brown in Italian is Morrone... Find the absolute best car you can, it will save you money in the long run. Did the black 5 speed in Huston sell? Regards, Art S.
Not completely insane or I would be comitted.I am doing a bare metal ground up on a 74 365GT4/2+2, and I want to drive it! Hopefully put some real miles on it. I have never made money on a car on purpose only by accident. I guess I am not that much of a horse trader... at least I am having fun with the project unlike my 401K that 1/3 disappeared and I didn't get so much as a smashed thumb. BTW these cars are way cool. Rick
Do we know how many 365 GT4 2+2's are on North American soil at the moment? There's only one for sale that I know of, and that's the Brown one.
Jonny, Ask Dave for his list + histories of the US 365/400 series cars. It's worth the $25 he charges. I'd give you the number but I don't have my copy handy at the moment. Regards, Art S.
my memory recall was 27 came into us, i am sure stacy will come up with exact # mine can be seen on my post
The more I look at the pics the more I like the car..... and those 6 DCOE's..... I have a fetish for them, I had a pair of 40's on my desk for a long time. And the marrone is totally groovy.
