    Where can the serial number be found on the body only? I'm hoping to find it underneath some carpeting, rear seat or door panels? Any ideas?

    Thanks for that information. This car had its engine removed, while they were in there, they took the VIN plate. Thats why I was hoping to find something underneath an interior panel or door panel.

    On my 400i the chassis number is stamped on the chassis rail on the right side of the engine in addition to the plate on the fender well. It looks as though there might be a number stamped there on your car as well from looking at the diagram posted by GreggG.

    There also is one on the steering wheel hub but I don't know if there would be one on your earlier car.
