Hello all, I am helping with the preparations for the sale of 365 GTB/4 Chassis 14763. I have a few questions for the more knowledgeable on the site here, as I have limited experience with Enzo-era Ferraris.

First off, I am trying to locate the car's engine number (if it has one) in the hope of proving the owner's belief that the car's numbers match. I have, however, seen some discussions that post-1970 cars did not have engine numbers, rather just "tipo 251," and some that say there are numbers. In any case, I would appreciate the help in locating these numbers or knowing there are no numbers to find. There is also no engine number stamped into the driver's door plate, which makes me think there wouldn't be a way to verify.

The second question I have is regarding the vehicle's production year. The car is titled as 1972 and appears to have been offered that way back in 2003, when it was offered at BJ's Peterson Museum sale. However, the car also has a production date of December 1971 according to the driver's door plate, and a "Vehicle Emission Control Information" plate that states "Regulations Applicable to 1971 Model Year New Motor Vehicles". I just want to make sure I have the correct year for the listing, regardless of the year it is titled as.

I appreciate any insight to these questions. Thank you!

AFAIK, the 365GTB/4 engine numbers are typically stamped at the right rear of the block, in the area circled in red and specific stampings covered with green tape on the attached picture.
The lower tape is covering a stamping on the raised, machined pad, while the upper tape is covering a stamping on the rougher, cast area.
To access and find these numbers, you may have to remove the battery & RH exhaust heat shield or use an endoscope type camera/equipment or a small mirror from underside of the car.

As for the model year designation, many, if not most U.S. market 365GTB/4s often show it being the year it was first time registered/titled in U.S., not when it was manufactured, which could've been months or more earlier.
For exampled, a 365GTB/4 might've been manufactured during the fall of 1971 with the door jamb production date designated & shown as, let's say "October 1971", but the car didn't reach the shores of U.S. until, let's say May of 1972 and subsequently it might've taken a month or few before it was delivered to the selling dealership where it might've sat in a showroom unsold until, let's say February of 1973 at which time it was first time registered and titled, possibly as a "1973", to the first owner*.
So basically, it really depends on how the paperwork was filled/handled by the importer, selling dealer and/or local registration authorities, i.e. "DMV", etc.

*How many "new car buyers" would've been happy to buy a new Ferrari, let's say in 1973, but have the title show it as a two year old model ? ;)
