While fixing a squeal in the rear of my C/4, I noticed something that has me thinking. The squeal was the driver's rear parking brake mechanism rubbing the wheel flange. While examining the entire works, I noticed that that wheel flange has some movement on it's splined shaft. The flange will rotate ( ever so slightly ) before the splined stub axle begins to turn. Upon further disassembly, I noticed that the washer under the outer castle-nut was installed backwards. The bevel was facing out, not in. The passenger side has zero movement. The flange rotates MAYBE .030-.040 What is the acceptable movement?? I understand that there can be a lot of lash in the driveline of a manual transmission of a car. Would this worry any of you experts??

It sounds like what you are describing is wear in the splines, possibly due to incorrect assembly or a loose nut. If there is spline damage it will get worse and needs to be repaired.

Splined shafts can be welded and recut so it isn't the end of the world.

Had a similar issue few years ago on a clients 365 GTB/4 with one stub axle/rotor hub set.
Had me chasing my tail for awhile as the "problem" (mild, intermittent clunk) was noticeable only under some specific driving & road conditions but in the end I discovered it to be a combination of possible slight wear on originally incorrectly machined/manufactured OEM(?) component(s).

So, did you fix the client's car or just live with it?? I can't imagine it being loud enough to hear while driving. Also, what is the torque value on that castle that hold the whole mess together??
