I was wondering if anyone has heard of the 365 GTC/4 Scaglietti convertible? There is a dealership that has had one for sale for about 2 years now and they claim that there were 4 made. Did Scaglietti actually make convertibles of this car or is this an after market cut car?

Just curious. Thank you for any responses.

    No longer here
Scaglietti never made any 365 GTC/4 cabriolet, spyder, targa, or similar.

365GTC/4 bodies were made by Pininfarina, were they not?

Really? Maybe you could post a link?

I tried searching on "365GTC/4 scaglietti," "365 GTC/4 scaglietti" and "365 GTC/4 convertible" and I did not find a complete answer to the question of whether Scaglietti ever cut any C/4s.

I agree, by early 1960's Scaglietti's workshop had already turned into a real car factory turning out standard series production bodies for Ferrari. I doubt they never returned to do any special work ever since and even factory commissioned alterations (for race cars mainly) were executed else where.

"Spider conversion by Scaglietti" is a term that has one and off been used by 2nd grade car dealers to market Daytona spider conversions. Even if this claim comes up every now and then, nobody has ever come up with any proof that Scaglietti would have cut one single Daytona spider, it just sounds better than "spider conversion by Joe Average down the street". Same goes for 365GTC/4. Best wishes, Kare

    here's a link to one on barrett-jackson

however, i'm still in doubt wether it was scaglietti who made them (note that pininfarina was making the bodies itself) and i found another version of it of ferraridatabase.com

With the top gone it looks like too much rust and too many bumps in the road have done their job and the shocks are about to burst the bodywork. The cheap looking red paint does not exactly help... No designer would ever have drawn a spider looking like this!

We must be looking at different cars! :? I think that chopped 365 looks wonderful - I'd get the 'clown lips' and side mirrors painted to match though.

PH #79 (Sep 1985) has an article about a targa style C4, SN 15213. The car was originally cut by the first owner, Sam Attenberg, in 1976.

Forza #69 (May 2006) has an article about the present status of 15213. The owner bought it in 2003 for $35kUS and has put $10K into it since.

On the contrary, there are many spiders out there, including the 365 GTS, that look very much like this car. The slight arch over the rear wheels helps to carry the same arch over the fronts, very much in proportion and much more interesting and esthetically pleasing than the slab-sided, flat edged Daytona version of the same layout.

Paint not withstanding, I think this conversion looks closer to what the factory would do than the countless other "spider" conversions out there, (400/412i, Testarossa etc..)

I doubt you would be so critical of this car if it came out of the factory this way, but then, we ALL are entitled to our opinions here.

I kind of like the clown lips but your idea of color matching would "update" the car, freshen the look.. I think the nose on the C4 is one of the best ones out there.

I know it has a lot to do with personal taste, but in every single case I can think of I prefer a coupé against a cabriolet. The roof is one of the key elements of car design and if it is not there the car starts to look like a bath tub to my eye. As I am not particularly fond of bath tubs, I prefer Tour de Frances, Pininfarina Coupés, GTCs and Daytona Berlinettas against their open sister cars - made by factory or not.

I even like the clown lips. They make the design look very determined and strong. If the nose is painted in body color, the nose design goes flat.

It's hard to argue against a 355 spider as a successful design but your point is taken. Simply put, you prefer Coupes/Berlinettas, fair enough.:p

It is a good look. However, I would give a cut C4 a wide birth. they are heavy cars and the top is a major structrual component. I Personally know of one cut C4 is so cal with stress cracks in the body and who knows what lurks under the skin.

The C2 was designed by PF and built by PF. I have no knowledge of Scagletti ever getting involved.

Not that it hasn't happened, but I can't imagine a competent builder/modifyer cutting a car without beefing the frame. It CAN be done and the car can turn out well if braced correctly, sometimes better than the factory efforts (re; 308 GTS cowl shake)
