Hey Everyone, I purchased a pretty nice driver condition 1972 365 GTC4 for just over $140k.. I have it over at well know mechanic I was referred to by Tom Yang. This guy has pulled the engine to replace the timing chain and take care of any and all old or worn things it needs.. The engine has great compression all around, averaging 150.... The car is red, but I am going to paint it either the dark gray or dark blue, not sure of the actual Ferrari Colors yet.. I have budgeted around $20,000 for the paint... Also going to redo the interior from the light tan leather and tan carpet to the medium saddle color leather with black carpet... I'm definitely going to redo the dash but had some 2nd thoughts about that mouse hair..Was thinking of Alacantara possibly? Interior I'm budgeting around $10k.. Let me know what you wall think? Here are some pictures.. Thanks so much for your help..
The stable ltd in gladstone nj had a gtc/4 for sale last summer that went to the uk that was blue with saddle (non matching numbers). That color combo worked well, there may be some photos of it on their website. If not I am sure Tom (owner at stable) would have some pictures... car really looked nice. It also had mouse hair and it worked, if she were mine I would keep the mouse, just looks the part (but would omit shag carpets everywhere at all costs).
It was a number of years back I got a set of seat covers through Re-Originals. Some of the finest leather I had ever seen cut from the original patterns and it was vat dyed. If I remember correctly - $3500. I would highly recommend going this rout if it is still available. Rebuilding the seats was another $1000 +. I did not change the color of my door panels, and just re-dyed them. I purchased 3 yards of Wilton carpet $500. Then the carpet needs to be cut and trimmed out. I got a roll of alcantara sued from Golf fabrics in Florida and I think it was also around $500. Adding it up an including leather for door panels, you may make for 10K. What ever you do, I hope you have great time putting it all together. A
One last item - there are 2 o rings that go under the rear main bearing cap (between the cap and the block). If your mechanic forgets them, it will leak!
Mike, Congratulations on the purchase! I drove this car and was debating trading my 328 and GT4 until you beat me to it! I think you got a great deal even though the car has a few needs.
That car is trending up sharply now,if I were you I would keep it period correct and abstain from adding anything that is not (like Alcantara,as nice as it is...)
I had the same concern configuration outside repair / interior for a car 400GT . The car was black when I bought it , when we put the sheet naked and discovered that it had been painted twice in black and the original color was certainly blu hyperion and Tan interior with inserts dark brown. Did not want to repaint in its original configuration and 400 with no significant financial value collector , I decided to treat myself and completely change inside and outside. My options were: 1 - Exterior color Grigio Mahmoud with red interior . Grigio Mahmoud 2 - Blu Swaters Exterior color with light beige interior Blu Swaters I finally opted for the second solution. The sheet was laid bare, except fully disassembled inside the dashboard in perfect condition. The leather interior was disjointed , processed, repigmenté , sewed . The site 365GTC4 attended my decision : Ferrari 365 GTC/4 Detailed Information and some 365GTC4 photo here: Ferrari *365 GTC4 for sale at Landmark Cars Ferrari 365 GTC/4 Registry Viewer Good road in your 365gtc4 , if your main concern is not the collection value , selected interior materials and colors that you like , life is short!
Hi Glenn, So sorry about that.. Ken had it up for sale for while I guess..He made a quick $20-$30k on me for sure.. I have still not driven it yet..But yes, it did need a few things for sure... Its going to be like Xmas day when it shows up here finished.. Just don't know what color yet to paint it..
Hey Mark, That's good advice, thanks..I will probably keep the Mickey Mouse Hair then, just place it with new stuff so its fresh.. You think its ok to change the original red color to something else? Thanks again Mike
As long as there is no modern equipment in it you should be fine with a different color. There are plenty of very expensive Ferraris, selling at a million +,with a color applied during restoration that is not original. A lot of Daytonas in particular, have different color and interior too from what they came out of the factory with.
If you are not keeping it stock, paint the front bumper body color - it helps lighter colors look great on the car (IMO). Whatever you do, do what you like; as long as its reversible at a reasonable price. e.g. if you like Alacantara, go for it. Regards, Art S.
Thanks Mark, That makes sense... The only new thing might be some fresh speakers? You can see them if I get some real bad ass ones then.. What about painting the front bumper? Thanks, Mike
I like the bumper painted too. Just so torn on which color combo to go with.. Dark Blue with tan, Dark Gray with tan, Median Blue with tan or saddle..
Mike, There is a member here from VA that has a blue/tan C4 with a painted front bumper. There are pictures somewhere here but it's been a while since I've seen them. Very sharp looking car! Regards, Art S.
Mike Check out the 364GTC4 owners site. There are quite a few members with valuable knowledge on these cars. Look at the gallery for many pictures of this model in the various colors to help you decide on a color. Dave
I'd leave the bumper well alone personally, this was how the cars came out the factory and in my view is how they should stay. The argument given by those that have painted the bumper is that Enzo was going to do it if production continued, but the fact is he never did. I'd say the painted bumper cheapens the car and actually looks a bit awkward, it's almost like owners are trying to bring attention to an aspect of the car they don't like. I'd say keep it stock, the design has grown on people over the years and continues to do so. I think it has a great 70's muscle car look about it, and long gone are the 'humpback' and 'clown lips' views of this now gorgeous car. My 2c.
Hi Dave, I looked at the 365 site, and that gallery area of pix is great. I'm leaning towards the medium metallic blue with tan, and the dark metallic gray with tan.. There was a bright orange one that looked great, but that might be to crazy for me, and a metallic green one that also looked nice.. Thanks for your help.. Mike
Hi Mike - I agree with your choice of colors, having thought for many years that if I repainted mine, I would go the same route you are going. Who is going to perform the work? If it is local, I'd sure like to drive up and see the progress. Keep in touch- Mike
