I like to post fun and interesting Ferrari pictures as often as possible. But it's very rare that amazing, incredible Ferrari pictures just fall into my lap...

What you see before you is s/n 10287, the 1967 365 GTP - the first of three "Daitona" prototypes - liveried in Argento Metallizzato with Pelle Nero VM 8500 Connolly leather. The front is similar to a 275 GTB/4; but from the windshield back, the car is more similar to a Daytona. It has open headlights; it had six taillights that were replaced with four standard taillights.

Many thanks to Marcel Massini for this fantastic and rare photograph (that's Marcel standing next to the car - no wonder he's smiling).

The 365 GTB/4 was the replacement for the 275 GTB/4. As the unofficial story goes, Ferrari was going to name the 365 GTB/4 after the track where Ferrari had an historical 1-2-3 finish - the 24 Hours of Daytona! But since there's no Y in the Italian alphabet, some of the press made fun of Enzo, saying he'd call it the "Daitona." Enzo got pissed, scrapped the name idea, and stuck with his customary engine displacement model-naming method (365 ccs x 12 cylinders = the 4,390 cc Colombo V12 with which the car was equipped).

Nice. It has a special engine too. I've heard it will be displayed at the Galleria Ferrari for a couple of months.

Hey, it's the rare, amazing, and incredible Mr. Marcel Massini!

By the way Carbon, if you're interested in learning more about this car, there's an excellent thread on 10287, 11001, and 11929 here: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/vintage-thru-365-gtc4-sponsored-vintage-driving-machines/397184-365-gtb-4-a.html

And further discussion, pics, and even video here: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/vintage-thru-365-gtc4-sponsored-vintage-driving-machines/370201-glimpse-daytona-prototype.html

And here's a fun little challenge for you: Much confusion between 10287 and 11001! Can you tell which is which? :D

The engine Type 243 was constructed with a three valve head
Called "Testa Piatta" or Flat Head.

The head was flat and the Hemi combustion chamber was in the "piston"

I believe it was developed to test for better pollution control results.

My factory records list a car as 330GTB prototype with type 243 engine and Autotelaio 605
I also have additional records stating that the 243 engine was a 365??

I have in the same records another car listed as 330GTB/68 (Daytona)
engine type 251 and Autotelaio 605 also 4 liter.
My additional records also list this 251 engine as a 365??

What ever all this means?? My records are Ferrari Factory documents from the period.

Also, In the 70's I did see the testa piatta engine with the heads off. I do have a picture some were but I am sure I will never find it in all my stuff.

Didn't Jaguar do a combustion chamber on the XJ-S?
Designed by a Swiss and called the "Heron" Head if I remember rightly.

Actually, the car pictured here at Meadowbrook is 11001 (the other similar-looking prototype), not 10287.

Just shows that if you mix 2 beautiful things together (275 GTB + Daytona) does not mean the result will be pleasant.

Was 11001 at one time painted red, or was that 10287?

Did 11001 always wear wires, and 10287 solid rims?

Did 11001 always sport red/orange tail lights or 3 aside like 10287?

Back in 1975, I had a car in my shop that seemed identical to the one pictured.

    BUT, it had a four-cam engine - 275 as I recall.

It was owned by Paul Least.
I was told that he traded it for a new 328 GTS.
    Comments?

I don't have all of your answers, but hope that this is helpful:

    10287
    - Was silver, then red, then back to silver.
    - Had alloys, then wires, now back to alloys.
    - Had six tail light arrangement, then four, now back to six.
    - Had a recessed headlight design, then to covered headlights, and then back to recessed.

    11001
    - At this point, I have only seen this car in silver.
    - At this point, I have only seen this car on Borrani wire wheels.
    - At this point, I have only seen this car with the four tail light arrangement, with the lights individually recessed. Notice the difference between this design and the four tail light configuration that was used on 10287 for many years.
    - At this point, I have only seen this car with the recessed headlight design.
