Can anyone explain why a 365BB is half the price of a Daytona when the BB is a better car ie handling, performance, rarity and in my view looks?

Why is a FIAT powered dino worth more than a 360? Because people are strange.

In both cases, because both of the former cars (Dino, Daytona) are perceived as being better looking than the latter ones?

BTW, I think you may be a little harsh in calling that a Fiat engine, even if it did get used in both a Fiat and a Lancia as well as the Dino.

Have you ever seen a dino engine? If your vision is 20/60 you can still see the 'FIAT' in block letters cast into the outside of the block.

The Daytona, is a milestone in automotive design.....like the piece of clay it was designed into...
Not to mention its race heritage.

The BB was merely Enzo's futile attemp to match the Mid engine grace of the Miura..

The truth is hard to accept !

It was my understanding that Ferrari did the design, Fiat took care of the manufacturing. In order to minimize costs, both Ferrari and Fiat used them in their respective "Dino" cars. Later, Lancia talked Ferrari into letting them have the engine for their race/rally cars.

BTW, this was the first Ferrari I ever drove (Dino 246), thirty-five years ago now. At that time, the "not a real Ferrari" thing was raging at its height and I passed on buying it partly for that reason, partly because it was not as fast as my Porsche 911S. It cost all of $12,500 at the time, the Porsche was about $10,000.

I am still regretting that mistake.

In what way? I thought the 275 2 and 4 cam cars were which is what the daytona came from. A daytona was an ill handling car.

I hope nobody is getting sensitive. Original poster said the Boxer handled better than Daytona. I said 911S was faster than Dino.

My point was that the Daytona and Dino beat the competition hands down on STYLE - a rather nebulous thing to fully define until the market makes up it's mind after 30 or 40 years.

The Daytona was an out of date design when it came out ie front engined. I've seen loads of Daytona's and contempated buying one last year. I still could as the car is for sale. But ......... I just can't get excited about the shape. I've got two Boxers and they look so Ferrari. I don't think the daytona does. It could easily be a Maserati or even a Toyata from the 70's. They also handle like a sack of ****. I've driven round the outside of they on track days in a bog standard 308 GTB. Yes they did race at Lemans but certainly not at the front. The 365BB was the fastest and most expensive car in the world when it came out in 73. People chopped in their out of date Daytona's for them. Certainly the guy who previously owned mine did. Will someone please explain the rub with Daytonas?

I agree with James on the looks of a Dino. I have a 246 GT. But I just don't see it with the Daytona. I want to like it but just don't like the looks. Maybe its just a personal thing. I think I might put a Daytona v Boxer post on the Daytona section of this forum to get the view from the other side!

    I can explain it.

    More people want a Daytona.

To set the record straight. 1-2-3 at LeMans isn't too bad is it?. How about six out of the top nine spots in GTS? Check it out.

I wouldn't want to call it a back marker exactly.

Is it the back or the front? Personally, I liked the Miura better at the time they were made, but this Daytona car has just grown on me ever since. I think I even like the US headlight version as well or better than the Euro Glass, and the coupe better than a roadster.

I have a little similarity with your personal thing on the Boxer, as a matter of fact. For a long time I thought it looked way too much like a 328. This is a car that needs to be seen up close and personal, preferably with the hatch open to appreciate it fully.

BTW, did you see the prototype Daytona that had a sort of 275GTB4 front end and the Daytona rear? Forza June 2006.

    Gentlemen,
There is no question that the Daytona has a more successful racing history than the Boxer.
The Boxer's problem was it's transaxle and poor tire technology at the time.

Today, however, Boxers consistantly overwhelm Daytonas in vintage racing.
But this is off the thread's query.

Historians note that the Daytona was designed as a stop-gap because the new Ferrari mid-engine answer to Lambo was too far off. The Daytona was supposed to be a low production run, but luckily for Enzo, it turned out that market demand at that time merrited extending the production run.

I remember looking at one of the first Daytonas at Crepaldi, in Milano, with my father in 1969. We both thought its esthetics were inferior to what it replaced (the 275 GTB/4). But good-ol-dad eventually ended up buying two Daytonas. However, when the Boxer came out, we both found it to be an excellent answer to Lambo and more beautiful than our Daytonas. So he bought a 512bb. After living with and working on Boxers and Daytonas for many years, I find the Boxer is a better car in practically all respects.

But my story is meaningless to the market. The foibles of the market currently dictate that older is (usually) more vintage, more expensive. It is not a question of which car is more beautiful, handles better, is faster... it is market value driven by geneology.

Funny: The first owner of my BBi traded in a 1973 Daytona 365 GTB/4 for it.

Hey Buzz, a 308 gtb even does circles around any bb on the track. A DAYTONA is a DAYTONA. It was king in its day!

How a car performs on a track is too often used as a way to measure a cars worth. My boxer will never see a track while I own it and the fact my 308 may beat it there isnt keeping me from selling it and keeping the boxer instead. I drive my car on the road, its a road car. Comparing a 308 to a boxer is a stretch, lol, you know it and so do I!

Paul, the only true measure is lap times. Otherwise you might as well buy a 70 1/2 firebird.

The hoods are too long on those old pontiacs, you cant reach the engine to stick the screwdriver down the carb when they flood.

Back to the OP question, seems to me that it's a generational thing.

In performance terms, GENERALLY the newer will outperform. Too many examples to quote. In 'looks' we get to go down that debate road: what I grew up with, fell in love with first, had a poster of, loved the movie it was in, whatever.

The Dino and the Daytona are just a nip's generation the predecessor to the query, so 'in time' I feel a BB will more than prove it's value mark. Maybe some dips along the way with the general economy, but in time, the next generation of cars will take over while that generation of buyers establishes just how "much" they've love 'em. I don't see the BB passing the Daytona, but in my wildest dreams, I never envisioned a Dino surpassing the BB. (I owned a 246GT in 1983-84, purchased for $19k, sold for $26k, crowned myself a genius.)

Give the BB time, and you'll see a rather steep escalation to close that "half price of a Daytona" gap.

Well, likely faster than my BBi at any rate. Never mind the go pedal; it's the brakes that need help. I think the BBs are more GT than track sports. You don't need a 5L 12 to race but it sure helps on the regular roads.

If it didn't damage the value I'd go for Carobu's wheel/brake/suspension upgrade in a second.
