Is there anywhere in the world that recondition these shocks ?
Go to the GTC4 Registry one of the Australian members of the C4 mafia is rebuilding them and his rebuilds seem to survive
Another option: FJB Ltd. / Jeff La Blond. He's in AZ and rebuilt my levelers and shocks. (623) 566-1628
I do them. They are a pain as the design changed every 6 months. I have done about 10 units. I could send you the custom seals or I could fix them the next time I am in th USA. I have pulled apart the Le Blond units after they had failed. Not a pretty sight. They were modified to suit off the shelf seals. IMHO they would never work. I had custom seals made so that they fit the original design. PM me if you want me to work on them. Good luck. They are a pain. I did repair BryanP and MarkD Queen levellers. John
Thanks for your kind words Michael. Do I owe you a beer or three?? These things are complicated, very intricate with lots of O rings in them but the secret is using custom made seals that are made specifically to fit the original internals. Machining and modifying the internals to fit current NAPA available seals is not the way to go IMHO. They take a lot of time to get right and if you don't pay attention to the details they will not work. You also need access to a filling system for high pressure nitrogen thru a grub screw filling point. Anyway I am happy to help people as it seems that no one else sems to make em work. I fixed them on my car because no one else could and they have been fine for 5 years of some pretty hard driving on some less than average roads. So far so good. John
Koni has made a coil-over standard type shock that replaces the levelers. I have them on my 365 GT 2+2 and my GTC4. They are great...They work perfectly. I just finished a 750 mile trip thru the swiss mountains with the 2+2. Car rides like it was built in 2010.
Stupid question but how can you tell whether the self levelling shocks are rooted? The bushes on my C4 are largely nonexistent and need replacing so I suspect the shockers are stuffed as well
Greg The self levellers are rooted if the car sags. It then scraps over speed humps etc. Measure the height of the rear wheel arch at the max and I think it should be 25.5inch with XWX tyres at 35psi. Have a look at www.365gtc4.com and there is copious discussion on these beasts. Check out that discussion. Make sure you are a registered owner on that site. There are lots of guys there who really know everything about these cars. Bill M in Qld is an encyclopedia on them. Ian W in Vic is also very knowledgable. John
