After I have bought my first modern Ferrari I started considering buying my first classic sportscar and 365GT4 BB caught my attention. The only problem is I don't quite understand what's going on with a pricing in comparison to 512BB. To me 365GT4 BB looks more special on paper. Very elegant, lower production numbers, weighs substantially less, more or the same amount of power comparing to 512BBi and 512BB. But at the same time it's cheaper. I'm novice in the world of classic cars, so could you, please, explain why is that happening? And shall I rush to buy 365GT4 BB because its price is just waiting to rocket or there are fundamental reasons holding it down?

Inputs from Boxer owners who can share driving experience would be particularly appreciated.

    Where is a cheap 365BB?

They should cost a good bit more then a comparable 512.

365bb are more expensive than 512bb and bbi. A good 365 is around 200k euros and great original cars or perfect restored cars are more.

It's a great car. Amazing to look at and very fun to drive.
make sure you buy obe with the 6 tail lights and 6 exhaust tips.

Boxers are the bargain of the Ferrari world. You can buy a great bbi for 130-150k. A mid engined, 12 cyl Ferrari that looks arguably even better than a 308..

they should be at least 300k..

Your car has to be my "1st among equals," what a remarkable example.

I never tire of seeing pictures of it.

Do you have any idea (or care to share) what it price your dad would sell for? Or is there one?

My reason for asking isn't to be nosy, but because I suspect the answer will speak to whether these cars are undervalued. My guess is more and more owners will not sell for what is perceived as the market, and prices will rise as a result.

I think all the Boxers are undervalued. They have been for a long time.

    Undevalued or underloved?

If buyers "should" be chasing these but they aren't what does that indicate?

I think all the Boxers and all the TR variants are priced exactly where they should be currently.

They are still stuck in that late 70's / early 80's era (from which no cars from any make have really endured well) time-lock ---- will take several more years for that to change.....if it ever does.

The boxers are seeing some lift now. I think they will continue to creep up.

The bb's should not be grouped in with tr's as you did in your post.

    Well, let's not count rare, supercars....like the 288 ---- that's a whole different scenario :).

I'll give you the 959 for sure, but I reckon that the Countach and the Vantage have not really done much better than the Boxer overall through the years. Today, you can still buy a nice 5000QV (if you can find one ;)) for around $150-190K. The Vantage has probably experienced the greater upside between the two, but even then, they are trading for only about double these days over their original purchase price.

I guess my point of view is that a car needs to start being worth 4-5X (or more) its original sticker to be considered "collectible appreciation" --- but, that is just my opinion.

So, will a Boxer ever bring say $325-400K + (keeping with my pet 4-5X idea) ??? who knows.....but, my guess is no. And, a TR going for $400-500K --- never, no way :).

If you can buy a 365 BB below the price of a 512 (IN THE SAME CONDITION) you should not wat and risk somebody else snaps it away for your nose...
But maybe it are cars that just need decent amounts of work and parts to get right...
What I see the 365 is about 50 grand in euro above the 512 carb, at least.
But I have been wrong before...

365BB is a more fun drive than a carb 512BB Engine is revs higher and has more of a sports car feel . They are also much rarer (387) made as opposed to 1900 512BB. The only one I could find for sale with a price is 195k euro on classic driver. One of my favorite Ferraris. Mine is not for sale (!). Actually its on car and classic website not classicdriver.

I believe 365s in particular are right on the cusp of being something truly special, right on the level with the Lambo periscopa Countach. Give it a bit more time.

    Fair point and comparison.

The irony for me was that 12 years ago when I was looking I drove all three of the boxers before buying. The 365 and bb were really neat cars but I chose the BBi as it was in better condition and I thought was the best looking of all the boxers. It was the most expensive at the time as well. I should have seen the 365bb as being the one to own however. My financial mistake;).

11 yrs of BBi ownership and I am still a very proud boxer fraternity member however!

I dont think anyone that purchased a Boxer over 6 years ago bought them as investments or expecting them to appreciate much, I didnt with mine just wanted a beautiful rare 12 cylinder Ferrari that offered great performance and was driveable. The 512s had alot of the bugs worked out from the 365 if you wanted one to drive especially with a dry sump oil system as I experienced oil starvation issues with my 328 and the many threads of guys in 308s trying anything such as accusumps to cure the problem on the track.

Thank you William. We have discussed this a few times and we love the car so much that at current value and offers (He was offered $300k a couple of weeks ago), the car will stay. The reason being that the cars are usually sold to purchase another and there isnt any other vintage Ferrari in the $300k-400k range that would be a good replacement.

    ^^^^^^^

Andrew, thanks for the response and I am not at all surprised by your answer.

It has long been my belief that, and rightly so, the 365 variant of the BB's have been more undervalued than its later stablemates. Certainly there were design improvements/refinements in later iterations, but as time goes by the performance/comfort differences become virtually meaningless, while the low production numbers, pure design, and sounds of the early car become the main focus.

Since the Boxer will and is becoming sought after for aesthetic and historical reasons, along with the unique driver's experience, I feel justified in the opinion that the 365 holds the greatest value appreciation potential in the next 10 years.

You have good reason to love and value your fantastic car!
