The time finally arrived, the "Red Ho" needed to get a rebuild at ~99,000 miles. After deliberations and intensive study I decided to make the pilgrimage north to the "Land of Newman". After reading the thread on Mr. Newman's remarkable transformation/restoration of Brett's 308 GTB I knew that I would follow a similar route. So, last Friday after work we hit the road and Saturday afternoon and over 400 miles later I pulled into Paul's driveway. He was there along with his lovely and gracious wife and four beautiful kids and the best Robert Duval lookalike I have seen to date: his father-in-law who by the way has a vintage Mustang as cool as any I have seen. The BB was there the 246 was there all real and up close. We met, ate and discussed the transformation of my car and the first 3.4 conversion of a QV. We also later met up with Brett so that I could see and feel the extraordinary power that these engines can produce. Brett was a very gracious host very proud of his car and rightfully so and took me for the ride of my life. His car is unreal in person, exquisite perfection and unbelievable power in a 308. I came away feeling that yes this is how Enzo should have made them. Thank you again Brett.
Since as I understand it this will be the first late 308 QV to get the 3.4 treatment I invited Mr. Newman to share this step by step here on fchat. Uncharted territory that I hope to get you folks involved in with us on the journey (adventure).
In addition to the motor work I have been shipping Paul suspension parts for a do over as I feel that the car needs a sturdy foundation and I already have installed a Ferraripilot radiator to handle the extra cooling needs, thank you to Richard & Richard at Radcliff's in Owings Mills. And thank you John for the radiator and all my calls concerning installation. I expect Paul to chime in soon as he begins the checkout, tear-down and reporting process. I imagine that I will be doing a lot of cringing as the report comes in on what my car's previous life has been like, we all know that Ho's are damaged goods. But it should be a hoot also. I also would like to start off with a thank you to Richard at Competizione for the great tune up in preparation for the trip. Let the fun begin.

Just got a report on compression test of my engine. Looks like this was timed just right. Overall not too bad for a 100k miles car but things were getting worn. As Paul puts it there will be more revealed on the autopsy table

Good question, but if you look and see #5 obviously that's not within the mean.

Newman says: if all were 150 great, all 125 not so great, 20 psi variation is less then ideal.

Your compression seems low - Good timing! (there's the edit :) ) When I had my PPI done last year I think 190 was very good, 175 was normal, and any lower signaled a potential problem. The leakdown test was also important to determine the overall health of valves and other components...

It is low and that is why the timing is good for the engine to be rebuilt. Also, euro may have higher comp. also due to different cams?

I meant to edit my response to say - Good timing! :)...

Perhaps someone here knows if the Euro should have higher compression?

You're a lucky man to have Paul working on this for you. Your car will be brilliant when finished and this thread will be hugely interesting to many of us -- thanks for this.

Cranking RPM matters, number of compression strokes etc. My carbed car was 175 across with the stock compression ratio. I was just testing the engine for the sake of locating a cylinder with an issue if one existed prior to teardown. I wasnt concerned if they were 150 or 175 and Im not doing a leak down test becasue its coming apart regardless. If they were all 150 on a 100K mile engine that would be pretty impressive.

Ive started the engine removal process. Pretty dirty from the valve covers down, a lot of it ended up on me! Axles out, rear header out, CIS distributor out, inner fenders, muffler, pipes and converter, diaper, ducting, coolant, front bumper and grill. Tomorrow ill take the engine out and get a better idea of where all the leaks are coming from then start taking it apart.

Sample tube nuts are mangled and the tubes are rotten. A few CV boots are cracked. Oil cooler lower line leaking. Noticed the transfer case casting date is 78 and the stamp number matches the bell housing as well so its a matched set. Did it come on an 85 from new? My gut says no but you just never know. My 79 said 79 the 78 I just restored said 78. No big deal just makes you wonder. Header heat shields are loose and cracking.
