I had the CAD model for a 360/430 gear gate, and I thought it would make a neat keyring. So I scaled it to 1/3 size and added a loop. They’re 3D printed in solid stainless steel with a bead blasted finish. They can be polished smooth, but it depends on how much time you want to spend doing it- polishing stainless steel isn’t fun! The shinnier one below was polished by me for about 20 minutes before I got bored; I figured it’s going to get bumped about on my keys anyway. Happy to make more for others that want one. £60 posted worldwide.

I honestly have no idea if anyone will want one, I just made them for myself. I originally wanted to get them CNC cut from titanium in a brushed finish, but the price does get pretty silly. Prices come down with multiples though, so you never know, we could do something more sensible if loads of people are into it. Could be a fun Christmas present!

Well, that would be Ferrari copyright wouldn't it? ;)

All things are possible - a pal of mine asked me for one with a toyota logo on it for his Ferrari replica. I said "sure". :D

Honestly, it would be trivial to do. The detail wouldn't come out fully though, so I suspect the h-pattern, which was used on cars with the carbon pack, will look better.

Thanks gents. So I think thats 5 so far. I'm happy to order up a bunch in 3d printed stainless steel like the ones above, but if we can get to 10, then the cost of CNC titanium with a brushed finish would come to about £200 a piece. It's like £700 as a one off, which even I think is a little hard to justify. :)

Very nice! I really like the partially polished gate. It has a weapons-grade look to it!

Thanks all. I'm looking into whether we can get CNC versions cut in the same brushed finish as the original gate done at a sensible price. That was always my intention with this, but you really need to order loads of them to get the price sensible. A couple of people have expressed an interest in order a few, so we'll see how that unfolds.

This may not go down well, but had you considered making them out of plastic chrome Robin, that way the key would not get damaged?

I've made a couple of plastic version on my own 3d printer, but that was just for prototyping. Its all about the weight and solidity of the thing though. Thats what gives the classic click-clack in your car, and thats what makes the solid metal keyring feel nice in the hand.

Not plastic please! The so-called "chrome" on plastic is actually aluminum-vapor-deposition. It's just a very thin layer of soft aluminum which would never hold up to a set of keys on the same ring. The gate would become just another piece of garbage. Stick to the stainless steel!

General Motors and other car companies used to use that process on switch knobs and interior trim. The aluminum layer would wear off in no time and the blue plastic would be revealed.

I think these already exist? In fact, thinking about it, this may have been my subconscious inspiration for making keyrings from my existing CAD models. Ultimately I don't have the CAD models for any 5 speed gear gates, and there isn't a great deal of point in me making them, as Hill and others already sell reproductions. They could be done really cheaply though, as they could be simply laser cut from sheet steel.

Thanks guys. I've looked repeatedly at CNC options, but I just dont think the costs are going to be feasible unless I order like 100 pieces. I've ordered up a batch of keyrings with a "satin finish" bead blasting. There's enough to cover everyone that has asked so far plus a few spares. I'll contact people individually when they arrive.

    Cheers,
    Robin.
