Has anyone added a 3rd brake light to their 400/412? What light did you use and was it difficult to do? Can you post pictures?

No background? Are you just safety-conscious, or is it a "getting US legal" issue?

Have you tried searching on "CHMSL"?

Kind of wondered about that myself as there are no safety inspections in Florida. I don't believe the most stringent conversion shops installed them as I haven't seen one car with it. Just stay way ahead of the crowd if you're worried of being rear-ended.
And put this face :p on your rear window & have them eat your exhaust. lol

If you install one don't drill any holes etc, use double stick tape on the rear window.

    Totally a saftey issue.

Agree about drilling holes. The rear AC unit would complicate that.

I did as you suggested and read about CHMSL. Not as effective as I thought. I did find some nice Hella stick on lights at Daniel Stern Lighting Consultancy and Supply Paint the black to match the interior color and they should look pretty stock.

Yes (like ABS not really being so effective in the real world), the real problem is that people drive too fast and tailgate at high speed. It wouldn't surprise me if the effectiveness of CHMSL is even less now that the taillight location on most coachwork designs has vertically "moved up" considerably in the last ~20 years more into the following Driver's field-of-view -- but your 400i is like the older typical coachwork design with a low, rear sloping trunk so yours is probably best case for CHMSL.

Agree that those (holeless) stick-on Hellas would be a good choice.
