Hi Team so far i have developed this web page for the Maserati Indy https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/classic-car-tyres/maserati/indy.html It's deficiencies have been shown up because I have recently had a question about tyres for these cars because of the special offer we are doing on these 15" XWX https://www.longstonetires.fr/catalog/product/view/id/1926/s/set-of-5-215-70vr15-michelin-xwx/category/9097/ and the later 4.9 cars had 15" wheels However it might not be as clear cut as i had hoped. To be Frank find OE spec for Maserati stuff is often not that simple. I am confident enough to say that the earlier cars were on 14" wheels and fitted a 205 section tyre (Importantly not 205/70). Does anyone know if it was Michelin XWX or, was it a Pirelli? i would not be surprised if it was Pirelli's CN72 as i know that a lot of other Maserati did fit the 205VR15 Cinturato CN72 that Pirelli are currently making. However for now these cars on 14" wheels are relatively simple for me because the 205VR14 XWX is the only decent tyre that is currently manufactured that you would consider for an Indy on 14" wheels. Then i believe that it became the Indy 4.9 in 1973 (Bigger engine and different gear box) and at the same time changed to 15" wheels. My customer currently has 215/70VR15 tyres which i understand as that was all that was available until Pirelli remade the 205VR115 CN72 Cinturato for us in 2010. https://www.longstonetires.fr/catalog/product/view/id/1455/s/205vr15-pirelli-cinturato-cn72/category/9097/ And when i look around i find detail difficult to find however this web site http://www.maserati-alfieri.co.uk/alfieri60x.htm specifies that it was a 205VR15. So if anyone can answer these questions that would be great and if they can supply any pictorial evidence that i can put on my web site i would really appreciate it . 1/ What tyre did the 4.2 & 4.7 Indy fit in the size 205R14 was it Michelin XWX or Pirelli Cinturato CN72? 2/ When they moved to being a 4.9 to 15" wheels did it fit 215/70R15 tyres or 205R15 tyres? 3/ If the 4.9 started off on 205VR15 then later went to 215/70VR15 does anyone know when? 4/ As 205VR15 was it CN72 Pirelli or Michelin XWX? 5 / If it moved onto 215/70VR15 was that with a Cinturato CN12 or Michelin XWX or something else?
On the early Indy 4.9s - the service manual provides for both tyres - Pirelli Cinturato HS and Michelin - and neither tyre is referenced in the build sheets or other documentation.
Dougal, As I may be the customer referred to and bringing some food for thought on the subject, I may give the following answers on 2) and 3): - very unlikely that 205VR15 was ever authorised/fitted on any Indy, while 215/70 VR15 was an authorised size for the Indy 4900 as per my registration documents (german Fahrzeugbrief) established in december 1974. - 205 VR15 would be a substantially bigger tyre compared to the original 205 VR14 tyre fitted on earlier Indy's while 215/70 VR15 has the same rolling diameter than 205 VR14. - on the contrary, both 205/70 VR15 and 215/70 VR15 were both authorised for the 4900, as per my documents.
Cheers Froggie i would like to update my web site accordingly. I would like to update my web site accordingly, and when i do so if i can back it up with evidence it helps people understand how i get to the conclusions i do. would it be possible to post you post a picture of your documentation for me to put on my web site. If you want to cover up some bits that would be fine. It is just the tyre spec i'm after.
Forgot to add: you see on the very first columnwhat are the authorised tyres for front (vorn) and rear (hinten). On second column the "standard" fitment 205/70VR15 for both. On the right side the "oder vorn" and "oder hinten" ("or" front and rear) authorised 215/70VR15 fitment
Yep that is correct for these earlier cars https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/michelin-classic-tyres/michelin-xwx/205vr14-michelin-xwx.html same as 275GTB Ferrari and lots of the 330's & MK10 Jaguar, so not the biggest selling tyre. but Michelin still make them.
