Over the last couple weekends, have been out sniffing around for a possible replacement for the bride's 530i (also drove a few cars that just seemed interesting). Drove a new A6 (both V6 and V8), Mazda RX8, Subaru WRX STi, Mitsu Evo MR, BMW 545i, Infiniti M35x, Acura RL.

Thoughts--the Audi's are nice (esp. the new direct injection V6) but the steering is too damn light, BMW's active steering doesn't seem nearly as weird as the mags suggest, but the interior feels very cold and sterile, but it is still a driver's car, the M35x is a neat car (almost as good in the driving dynamics department as the BMW, with a much more elegant interior), the RL was a disappointment--steering a little vague, engine doesn't seem like 300h.p., interior a little low rent for 50K.

The MR is a fun car, but very hard edged, the WRX is still fun, and easier to live with, and the RX8 is remarkable well balanced (but needs an extra 75hp).

I was really suprised by the Infiniti M--worth a look for anybody looking at a 50K sedan. Still need to cruise Chrysler and M-B.

The new Audi is yet another example where designers have managed to screw up a perfectly good design.

Designers will keep designing if left to their own devices. At some point they need to be dragged away kicking and screaming from their SGI workstations!

Don't bother at Chrysler considering the bunch you were checking out and I really am liking the new Infiniti Ms. I think a M45 would be a great car and love the looks. (mostly. the front bumper is just a little too much like the new BMW 3 series)

I haven't driven it, but I fell in love with the new A6 at the LA Auto Show.

Have you looked at the new Lexus GS yet?

Still need to drive the M45. I need to look at the Lexus GS--the only issue is that every time a have driven a Lexus I have found them a bit to soft. If they have a sport suspension option that might help.

You need to look into a Chrysler 300C, with a Hemi of course. Affordable, fast, powerful, and bada$$. American muscle is back.

Other cars you might want to try: CTS-V, G35 Sedan and like others mentioned Chrysler 300C. Or better yet wait a little while and look at the 300C SRT-8(that will have 425 hp). If you get the SRT-8 loaded with nav the msrp will be approx $42-43K. The 300C SRT-8 should be going on sale very soon.

Conrad--I am interested in what can be done to WRX's (and STI's). The daily driver is for my wife--I think she will have zero interest in the car--but I am eyeing one as a possible daily driver/track car. Can you post the mods to your car, and any dyno information if you have it?
