Hi everyone. As promised in my other thread, I have pics of the respray's I'm doing this week.

Over the last 2 days I have disassembled and stripped the paint from 4 of my models.

    1. Maisto Lamborghini Diablo SE30 - Originaly Money Green Metalic - Torn Between Red and Silver (keep original for SE30) or stray and go with Orancio (Orange)
    2. Hotwheels Ferrari F355 Spyder - Originaly Red - Goning to be Blue (Azuro california maybe)
    3. Gate Porsche 911 Carrera (996) - Originaly Pale Yellow - Going to be a dark Blue
    4. Gate Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet (996) - Originaly Pale Yellow - Gun Metal Grey

All the cars are at the same stage right now; They have all been stripped of all plastic parts. Completely disasembled. Stripped of all paint using aircraft paint stripper. Sand blasted parts that didnt strip. Sanded with 320, 400 then 600 grit sand paper.

Once I have the cars painted, I will also be painting the interior of each car. I may add details, but I think it will just be paint for now.
I will post progress pics as I work on them. This is going to take a while.

Please post comments and/or suggestions. I am still open to color ideas until they are painted. So if you have an idea for a color, please let me know, and if possible link to or add a pic of the color on a car.

It happens, don't let it get to you.

As for colors, yes on dark blue for the 355. Carrera cabriolet in metal grey.

How 'bout leaving the Lambo as is? Gives it that De Lorean edge. :)

lol. funny you should say that. My uncle suggested the same thing when i went down to the body shop to strip the paint (my dad owns a shop). I considered it. I even had all the sand paper and polish that i would have needed for it. The problem is, the rear bumper and side fends and mirrors are plastic, so thats impoissible. To bad though, it would have been cool.

lol. If you look in the first pic, you can see my digital camera. My batteries were dead, so I used my cell phone.

And yeah, I do have a bit of work to do. Most of the work was disassembling them all withough breaking them and then getting the paint off. Sanding them actualy wasnt that hard. took me a couple hours.
I got all the cars primerd in one shot. now the hard work is making sure the paint is smoothe. need to sand some of the primered card next. I was able to paint one car already. I got the porsche coupe painted last night. I have to spray a couple pieces over again but i ran out of paint and today is a holiday.
I'll try to finish it tomorrow. Here's some shots in the mean time. They are also done with my phone, because i can't find the digi now..... *grumble*

Hey, nice job on the Porsche! Could you post some pictures of the models with their original paint? It would be nice to compare.

the yellow looks fine in the picture, but it was very pale. wasnt a very nice color. I got to carrera 996's in the same color, and i already had a 997 in yellow, so i wanted a change.

That's a pretty good job so far! Looking forward to the rest. You've got me interested in doing the same now! Except i'm not starting with any 1/18's, as I havn't enough of them to sacrifice... Student Budget here. But i found some cheap 1/43 Gallardo's in yellow. So I'm keeping one yellow, and will paint the other 2. Any tips? I've never done this, but it looks like fun!

Hey, nice collection you have there. What are you going to do about the badges for the 911, can you buy them?

Also, what about respraying the F430 in that dark silver, with red leather int., that would look awesome.

Just one thing about the Carrera, the speckles in the paint look a little too big for the model, I know for real cars there are different size flecks of silver you can choose. Might just be the photo though.

thanks man. for your gallardo's, first off are they diecast, resin or plastic? diecast can be stripped (wich i recomend, to save the body lines), resin and plastic need to be sanded only.
sand/strip the paint, sand it smooth with lesser grit. start with 320 on metal, 600 on plastic, resin ive never done. move your way up to 600 for the metal, and i recomend 1000-1200 for plastic. if you dont use stripper, treat metal the same as plastic.
Spray everything with light coats of primer. may take 2 - 3 to get even spread. dont spray to much at a time. let the paint sit about 10 minutes between coats. get zync based primer for bare metal. plastic adhesive primer for plastic. I use automotive paints. Model paints will work also.
If the primer is evenly spread, and there are no runs, you can spray the first coat of paint while the primer is still tacky. Give it about 10 - 15 minutes first. This is what i did for the porsche. spray on a couple of thin coats just like the primer.
Wait at least a day before touching anything. wait at least 3 before sanding any imperfections.
good luck! post pics when you do it. im looking forward to seeing these.

    Thanks for the coments!

the 911 badges i'm not sure yet. I may have to do without :(

I've though about respraying the F430, and i just can't do it. The paint is to perfect on that car. I may respray the interior, but it wont be red. although, i do know of someone that did something similar to what you're thinking.
    http://www.raidou-models.com/pageID_3274841.html look at the F430's

as for the paint, i know what you mean. the pics make it look really bad. When its sitting on the shelf, the color is actualy quite different then you would imagine. You can't actually see the sparkles at all.

A great source for decals in all scales, including 1/18 is:

    www.pattosplace.com

they have all sorts of decals that could help with the 911 badges.

I am going to strip and paint a Kyosho Daytona...any suggestions on how to disassemble these cars to get them down to the bare body in order to strip the paint? I am worried about breaking the parts. Also, any suggestions on how to deal with the fragile silver/chrome windshield/rear window frames? Is it best to just leave those on the car and touch up paint with silver after the respray is finished?

YES! Please let us all know the best way to DISSASEMBLE diescast models! We can all figure out how to strip and paint once there, but we need to know the best procedures for deconstructing the model without damaging it!

    HELP!

its very difficult to disassemble diecast properly.
I suggest getting a very small flathead screwdriver (or 2), I also needed a dremel for certain parts. You're gonna need a lot of patience.
Maisto models are easier to dismantle. Hotwheels cars are tougher. other models im not sure.
You won't get them apart withough breacking anytrhing. On each one that i have done, something has broken. Usually just a clip or something. i just glue them back on.

    good luck!

Well, i've taken one of the Gallardo's apart with no issues. Of course, they are 1/43, no moving parts, cheap Maisto models. They look pretty good tho. They are in fact diecast, so i suppose thats good. I have 2 to work with. One I will do orange like this one I came across on Lamborghini Chat. Not sure which wheels tho. The other I am not sure... One of these yellow ones, or the blue? Suggestions?

Is it best to use spray paints or model paints with a brush? And is there any way repaint a 1/64? The Hot Wheels ones at least cannot be separated from the bottoms. :S
