http://www.fd3s.net/downing/ I had to find out alittle about this car after I dug up an old video from an 03' American Lemans race at Road America.....Audi won of course, but the sound of this little red car was more memorable! Maybe I can upload abit of video one of these days....The sound of the 4-rotor gave the Ferrari 550GTCs V12 a run for its money! And the 550GTC sounded insane! Anyone else think a 4-rotor engine is one of those sounds that just gives you chills?
i fully agree, in 4rotor at full noise sound just like a fomula one car!!! i love the 787b for the 91 le mans race too
I love the 18" of blow torch out the tail pipe at full song. The entire exhaust glows at night in Daytona. The shreek and shrill of that 4 rotor is awesome. Rick Engman tunes those things for Jim Downing. All running MoTeC controllers and get about 20 hours of dyno time before they are put in the car...
Sweet find Gull! Back at an IMSA race in '92 I don't remember the Mazda P car sounding so good. Both are great looking machines no doubt.
OMG ROTARIES ON THE FERRARI FORUM. Dream come true. You should hear a full race ported 3 rotor, sounds almost as good. But the 4 rotor is the king. I saw and spoke to Jim downing and Rick Engman at Sevenstock this year in california at Mazdas R&D Facility. They had a few of the 3 and 4 rotor race cars. But the best was JGTC race at california speedway about 2 years ago. The RE Amemiya 3 rotor RX-7 was by far the best sounding car. Also during the hotlaps session, the RX-7 was passing everyone. Went to pass the 360 Challenge car and ended up rear ending him and blew up his own radiator. RX-7 limped home w/ steam barreling out of the hood and the ferrari had a stitched rear bumper the next day. The ferrari owned was not happy -Ben Martin viva los rotary!
Rotarys are the loudest of engines. My FMazda is required to have a large muffler and for certain tracks an additional Supertrap. I believe its because of the long duration that the combustion chamber is open to the atmosphere.
That Mazda actually sounds good, but maybe because it's on video. When I heard the rotary powered LMP at Laguna Seca last year, it was the most horrible sounding car there. What an annoying buzz!
Are you talking about the RRR RX-7 during the hotlaps? I completely missed that portion of the event. I have to agree, the RE Amemiya RX-7 sounded the best. Here is a little clip from the event. http://www.alamomotoring.com/JGTC/REAmemiya_JGTC.wmv
I've never gotten to hear a 4-rotor in person, but the B-K Motorsports 3-rotor LMP2 car just sounds awesome. You know a car is serious when you can feel the ground shake. Nevermind the sight or sound, I could tell when the rotary was going by if I held my mouth open because I could feel it shaking my lungs.
4-rotor sound is pure awesomeness. A change of pants commence once it starts to sing. That includes a race prepped 3-rotor. I would like to see if Mazda moves the BK car from 3-rotor to 4-rotor this year in Alms. Also, the RX8's (some) moved up to the GT class this season in the Grand-Am series. So lovely to hear them fly by in their prepped 3-rotor. Sadly reminds me that I am missing 2-rotors to get that sound.
I missed my 3rd gen Rx-7, I had two of them! They are loud when you take the cats out replaced with dp and mp. My wife usually can tell I am on my way home from 3 blocks away. I was actually at RA to see and hear that 4-rotors, and was also photographed hehe..., I have to say it is not F1 but it sure sounds good!!!
A really close friend of mine works for Jim Downing at Downing Atlanta so they get to see these cars every day. I believe they sold off all of the Kudzu's though so I'm not sure what race cars they have there now other than Jim's RX-7 GT car (2nd gen I believe; 20B powered). Oh, and at some point recently they had Mazda's 792B in there, but I'm not sure what for. Anyway, here's a really good vid of a 4-rotor powered FD from Australia. IIRC it's pushing in the vicinity of 580hp n/a with a street port (might be a bridge port, but the idle sounds too smooth for that). http://videos.streetfire.net/category/Mazda/9/E92EAE11-DDEA-475E-ACFA-6ECBD70EE2F7.htm Scoot 4-rotor car: http://videos.streetfire.net/category/Mazda/19/0E9B68D6-20B9-4FDF-8B89-4BA5B216E68E.htm 792B vid: http://videos.streetfire.net/category/Mazda/9/9464A439-D7C8-4A72-9515-1FA7070EC5AF.htm ...and a couple of 3-rotor vids just for the heck of it: http://videos.streetfire.net/category/Mazda/0/63DB9082-732D-408B-8302-43D80308B0F9.htm http://videos.streetfire.net/category/Mazda/10/B477393D-F549-4AAF-A795-4E0225579640.htm http://videos.streetfire.net/category/Mazda/19/EED94FC2-2F0A-4EBF-BF0B-CD1A7ED31BD4.htm http://videos.streetfire.net/category/Mazda/21/FAC84991-93D2-4844-9FF5-16CDF5D594B9.htm ...and only 2-rotors, but some nice footage: http://videos.streetfire.net/category/Mazda/17/6D3BF5D2-1577-4C40-B150-6C41CE6E7F4E.htm I definitely miss owing my former FD and may consider getting one again in the future if Mazda never brings out another RX-7. So many of them are ragged to pieces that it might be a lost cause. Oh well.
I have liked that Scoot RX7 for a long time. Not so much the sound, even though it's nice, but the way it rev's is simply awesome!
