I you were going to spend $40k on a 'toy' Porsche, what your choice be? It would be a weekend/fun car, not intended for daily driving. Considerations should include resale value, maintenance costs, desirability, etc. Boxsters don't count.

Get a 911, boxters arent as powerful (im not sure if your buying a cr here or not but whatever) . they may be fun though. youi may consider getting a lotus elise im sure you can find one in that price range. Good luck and i hope you get a good car.

If you are old school...get a nice 993, widebody.

If you want to track, a base 993 for 30k or so would be a blast.

If you want collectability, get an early 911 turbo.

If you want cheap, and easy, with no character, get a 996.

The boxster didn't do it for me either...

Since you mentioned resale value, I'd consider bumping your 40 to around 55 and you'll open up a wider range of unique cars that DO hold their value.

    My picks?

    1992 American Roadster
    1993 RS America
    1994 Speedster(I just adore that cut-down winshield)
    1994 3.6 Turbo

Latest 993 you can find. Or a 996 in the right color with good options combo, but tough to find one that stands out.

I know of an 97 993 Cab for sale. Black over beige. Only about 10,000 miles. All services performed at Porsche dealer. He's looking for only $37,500. Let me know if interested.

    BINGO.... we have a winner.

The hands down most fun to drive car I have ever driven is my 1969 Porsche 911S. At 2150lb and 220hp, it eats up cars with twice the horsepower. The early (pre '73) 911S is just about as close to a street legal race car as most folks ever get (Jim G obviously excluded!) The steering feel and feedback is best described as telepathic.

The early 911S will also increase in value, and if your even slightly mechanically inclined you can fix it yourself. They really are fantastic cars, old school reminders of what really made Porsche great! These cars were built back when Porsche was a hard core company focused on building the hands down best sportscars on the planet and proving that capability by dominating top level international sportscar racing. Hard to argue with 17 Lemans Victories!

Personally I prefer older models. Nothing past the 80s. Speaking of early turbos steve harris imports has a very nice turbo (tan/gold ext.) recently restored for about 20k very nice!

    Best of luck

As stated above, early 911S(69-73) or 930 turbo. Both are great cars that deliver raw performance and won't be depreciating any time soon.

I'd go with a '72 S solely for the cool oil filler flap on the rear right flank :) Just never loan it out to a friend who isn't in the know!

$40k? Kind of a hard price range to find something I would really want just as a weekend toy. I'd like a 993 Turbo, but you can't find one for that price. I'd probably save up and go for the Turbo later on.

haha! the famous, 'dont add gas there' car

early 911s with sorted numbers with mild mods (cams, tires, suspension) are extremely entertaining and provide honest feedback on your talents...its more entertaining when the car informs all the way to the limit unlike the newer computerized 'neutral' feeling cars. good in tight roads and highways - they may not be the car to drive downtown most of the time.

good compromise - 1987-89 - Carrera exceptional value for the money

    best looking - 993...no competition

Hands down, early 911S is the real thing to get. I have a softwindow S. If you prefer an open top, that's the car to get: Nothing beats the sound of an S engine when the soft window is down and you drive it hard up to redline.

Suprisingly, nobody suggested a 356. Just got a very early 356A sunroof coupe and it is fun, fun, fun and THE ideal weekend cruiser.

Though you got to spend a bit more than $40k for a sorted, fun, excellent softie S or 356A

Personally, my first pick would be a 944 Turbo S, but I'm a little weird like that.

2002 Carrera Cab. Got one in black/black if you want it... ;)

The 996s are reliable like any Japanese car but they sure don't drive like any Japanese car! My dad loves his car, he just wants to upgrade to a 996 Turbo Cab.

For a weekend car, something that can go topless is almost always best. :)
