Anyone have experiences with doorlock barrel/key ?? Is it possible to dismantle/refurbish or overhaul ?? Not able to lock either door from outside, which could be nice when leaving car not in garage. Locking doors from inside OK. Key goes in OK, but can only turn it approx 45deg either way and no locking. (I'm not convinced it's the correct key for the barrel -but former owner insists it is.) Any advice welcome. Regards Harald -77, 400 Automatic
My locks acted the same way for a while...then I decided to"KISS" on the subject..I put liquid graphite in the locks and on the keys and let the locks sit a spell..then I gently but firmly worked the key in the locks, and the now lwork perfectly..the do, to the uninnitiated, seem to work oddly with the belated lock/door mechanism tumble, but I've just accepted this as SOP..and I keep them liberally lubed..perfect.Jp
As I recall the cylinder is retained to the handle by a small bolt, removing the bolt allows you to remove the cylinder. This handle is very similar to what Alfa Romeo used on Spiders 1970 - 1994 and Alfa supplied most of the internal parts for the handle / cylinder.
actually the handle is the same as was used in the old Alfa Spiders. All the rest of the small technical goodies comes from the Fiat 130 series on my 400A Btw, I hade the same thing when I bought mine. I seems I could not get it locked. I thought, that is, it just needed a bit more wrist power, before it disengages with a firm and strurdy "CLONK". After owning a lot of italian classics I was not used to the "german' feel of the 400 locks Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks Jacques, keeping it simple is a good principle!! A good spray WD40, two cups of coffee and then careful simultaneous working the key and inside lock did the trick!! Locks/unlocks now with a chrisp snap. Thanks again. Harald
rinse it out now with brake cleaner and lubricate with graphite. WD 40 is good to free it up but attracts dirt and isn't a very good lubricant for this.
