I posted this question a long time ago so I thought I would ask again. From what I've read, the carbureted 400A was never sold in the United States. Has anybody ever run across a 400A engine and automatic transmission for sale? The 400A does not seem to be very highly thought of, but I wouldn't mind finding one for my long term project. Just curious if anybody has seen any carbed 400A engines and the automatic trans for sale any time. If they have no great admirers, then the engine should be cheap if located. What does anybody think they should sell for?
Most of the cars I've seen that have been parted out the people want the same for the engine & trans as the car is worth as a whole, don't forget they make great bits for replica builders (whats better to put in a fake Ferrari than a real Ferrari engine)
Horsefly - Cannillo has a whole 1978 400 with carbs and automatic. See FerrariBuy. I've driven it - very nice and certainly not for cutting up (I hope), but proof that at least one made it here...
The trans mission is basicly a GM turbo400 Hydromatic. The case is differant because of the difference in engine block sahpe of course. I have never had to pull one out of a 400 so I have know idea if an adapter plate is used or not. If you need a 400 trans I have one stitting in the garage out of my old 74 Vette.
I've also heard that the Turbo 400 used on the Ferrari had a case that matched the Ferrari engine block. So therefore, a Chevy Turbo 400 wouldn't work. (I've got one of those as well.) But no need to worry. If I ever find the carbed 400A engine, hopefully it will still have the turbo automatic transmission still attached. I will probably find neither, or both.
