I suspect my brake booster has a vacuumleak or the membran is old and stiff. The pedal feels hard and unresponsive. Vacuumpump is ok,so are the hoses.

I have sourced out some RHD cars for breaking but I'm not sure if I can use this booster in LHD car.

Any idea if this part is the same on both Versions ?

Afraid I can't help with advice on the brake servo but wondered where in the world these RHD 400's are being broken and if any other parts were available as there are a few items I may need.

    Thanks,

    Russ

Ak Jim : Yes it can but no one near me. Needs to shipped overseas to someone familiar with these italian brakeboosters.

Rustytractor : This guy in Germany has parts. I mailed him in his own language. Don't know if he speaks English : Sonstige Artikel im moto-mare Shop bei eBay!

Do you mean the booster only or the booster/master cylinder together? The last time I bought one (for my RHD 400 Auto) it came with the master cylinder and this is different LHD & RHD as the holes for the pipes are in different positions. It may be possible to reroute the pipes but I am not sure if there is enough space between the master cylinder and heater to do this - I don't have my car hee to check it at the moment.

I never used the new unit (long story) and I may still have it somewhere if you need it but I don't think it will fit a LHD car.

Thanks for great pictures. Now I can compare with my car. I think the servo is the same but the sylinder is probably different.

I'll get back to you :)

    Hello Arvid
Pretty sure you need the left hand drive because theres not enough space to fit otherwise with the hoses. Eurospares have them ime sure and its not a big job to fit.
Its the same unit for 400s and other cars so you should get one from a younger car maybe testarossa or otherwise then it will be unlikely to fail. Eurospares test the secondhand units they have.
    Regards
    Alastair

    Thanks Alastair,

There's another interesting point. Which other models use the same servo ? I've tried to compare pictures on parts sheets. Some looks like the same part but different part nr.,other differs in details (but could still fit,maybe...)

Anyone know which models use the same servo ?

Well,I finally got the booster back from repair and anodizing. Looks like new,but... it was not the problem for my unresponsive brakes although it did lift the finish in the engine bay ;-)

To make a short story long,I bought the car with bad brakes. The pads were old and worn and so were the discs. Naturally I bought new parts but it did not help at all. Also the pistons and calipers where checked. I then checked the vakuum, hoses and pump. All good. Next step was the booster since these may have an old and hard membran. This was unfortunatly not the problem either...

Brakepedal is still to hard and needs plenty of force to stop the car effectively. What can be wrong ? Rotten brake hoses ? What about the pressure regulator/cylinder under the master cylinder (what is its purpose) ?

    Thanks,
    Arvid

Have you checked the in-line valve (Ferrari Parts : 128435 VALVE : Ricambi America) to see if it is stuck in the closed position? I am not near my car to snap a photo, but this valve is located to the rear of the booster/servo and is held in place with a metal tab. Hope this helps.

    Hi Schumi,

I'm aware of this valve. It is connected to the intake of one of the cylinders. I've disconnected it and checked that it has suction.

I've puzzled over this. What is its purpose ? The pump creates vakuum for the booster and this valve also creates vakuum, though in pulses since it's connected on just one cylinder. Is it a back-up if the pump fails ?

I'm not sure of its purpose. There is a spring in there with a ball. I had similar issues to what you have described but my problem was the booster itself. I took this valve out on both sides and made sure I could blow through it before I sent my booster off.
Your problem still sounds like a vacuum leak somewhere. Hope you get to the bottom of your problem soon.

The valve is a one- way check valve...the purpose ,I believe , is to hold the vacuum in the booster, otherwise it would flictuate. Having had a similar problem with an othe car I would check to see how much vacuum there is at the booster...a minimum of 15 is recommended also check to see if the push rod is traveling far enough to activate the booster....all the best, Marc
