I can't say that those poor red foglamps in the rear look as if they belong there, and more of an afterthought... A world of pain indeed for a brave new owner.

I saw this advert a couple of weeks back, rather odd, in another ad they don't mention this gearbox change at all!? The car look good as is and should be sold as an auto in my view. £13500 is reasonable/cheap if running ok.

I saw the same ad, agreed the "manual conversion" wasn't mentioned. I can only assume the seller's trying to make the car appear more desirable by removing the Auto box.

Actually he's right - a modern 6-speed with longer 5/6th gears would transform even a manual car but the cost would be too high and to properly overcome all of the problems would be a real ball ache to say the least.

And in the end all you'd end up with is a hybrid car with less value to a purist than a standard auto or manual car.

You're 100% right - the car looks pretty good and at that price should sell on its own merit despite the afterthought fog lamps.

The resto-modders of classic Mustangs and many other old Detroit cars need to cut the transmission tunnels to fit the Tremec T-56. It's a lot bigger than lesser gearboxes. My eyeballing of the tunnel in the 400i says there's not much room to spare with the TH400 that's in there now. There would also be the problem of sourcing the Ferrari clutch pedal and related linkage, a flywheel, and a clutch that would work. Kind of a silly ad really. We could equally as well advertise our cars to be "ready" for conversion to turbocharging and individual runner fuel injection (which I think would be a great upgrade).

    I don't get it...
The car is advertised as a 6-speed manual but the spec's. on the right of the page as well as the pix show it's an auto box.

    Which is it

Re-read the ad - It's an auto - the seller is offering potential buyers the option of getting it converted to 6-speed manual at extra cost if they wish.

Nice idea, not economic or mechanical sense really as it would be a minefield.
