Anyone know the cross reference for the Bosch alternators on a 1985 400i. I'm pretty sure they share a part with an early 80s BMW.

I can tell you this, these alternators area very easily rebuild-able. What can go wrong? The brushes wear out and/or the regulator fails. The brushes and regulator are externally mounted and it takes two screws to swap out the unit. The part costs about $28. Give me until the weekend if you want part numbers. I have rebuilt both of mine. There are multiple part numbers for basically the same unit, the difference might be that the bolt tab is at a right angle versus straight. If you want to rebuild, let me know and I will look up part numbers and give you a supplier.

How about posting the part number here? That way someone can search for it at a future date.

It is possible to replace both alternators for one new alternator with a higher capacity.
I'm having contact with a company who refurbishes these alternators and they can use extra copper windings to higher the output. Will post on this subject later when it is sorted out.

With one high amp alternator will the thin belt take the load? You may need the thicker conventional belt.

Don't throw away the old ones. They are very rebuildable. We use a shop in Ft. Lauderdale that can rebuild them at a reasonable price. Call me at 954-764-7824 if you would like their contact information.
