If it already has the California emission requirements met, that is worth some premium over market.

    Good day Paul,

I had someone check this one out some time ago... Sadly, I did not get the chassis number...

It is a fairly significant project:

    1. The engine cannot be run for too long because of the smoke it generates... the car is "buried" inside the facility and cannot be easily taken outside and thus even getting a test drive is difficult and so a "as it sits" inspection was only done.
    2. The interior leather was quite dry (and crumbling in places) and a number of interior items (dash trim, seat adjusters, etc) were modified by one of the owners.
    3. Carpets are worn in places.
    4. The rear shocks look like they are leaking
    5. Underneath has a fair amount of surface rust, etc
    6. Body itself looked not too bad (it did not appear rusted out), but is in need of a repaint (paint is not original and is so-so) and no doubt some repair.
    7. Rear window glass is delaminating (drivers side upper area)... (a new one is about $1800)

Overall the car looked like it has not been loved in some time...

They want(ed) $37K CAN and said they would let it "go" for $32K CAN as it sits and would not move on this price. The dealership's owner does not need the $$$ and appears to be happy to let it sit...Interestingly they bought it at auction a few years ago for around $22K (+ GST) if memory serves...

    Cheers,

    Sam

Wow, sounds like a lot of work. I do like the color though. To me it's hard to fathom letting a Ferrari sink to such a poor state of health! :)

Thanks Sam I figured you would know about it. They told me they wont let anyone test drive project cars because of too many unknowns, how convenient. They told me $32K as well sounds like a parts car unfortunately because to restore one completely (as this sounds like its in need of) would be 6 figures. Anyone need a body? I could use the engine for a boat or coffee table.

i thought you might have been familiar with this one Paul, as it was just south of you for a long time...

it was owned by a well known Barrie financial guy named David, who lived west of town and had a huge, fully 'decked out' barn that housed all of his cars and motor bikes.

as the story goes, this car was owned by a foreign diplomat in Ottawa and was 'customized', including a small fridge, to his peculiar taste, with lots and lots of additional wood trim.

it would definitely be a decent starting point but, yes, to do it to your standard, it would certainly be a six-figure project...that aside, i can confirm that they are great, truly usable family GT's.

let me know if you want sample one for a weekend before you actually buy one, as i'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this series of Ferrari's.

Yes now that you mention it Ive seen that car around and met the owner one day but never made the connection I just assumed it was still around just hadnt seen it. He owned or owns some english cars as well and had it serviced by the local english car specialist. At the time I saw the car it did smoke a bit but looked pretty good on the outside which was 2 years ago. Not interested in restoring one for myself I would rather get in one and go so I may take you up on the offer so my wife can experience one, easier to sell her on it that way!
    Thanks

it might also be a really inexpensive way to confirm that you don't actually want one...and come on, it doesn't matter what you buy, you'll tear it right down to the block regardless, no ?

Have to say though, my wife likes the 280Z a lot more than the 400, go figure.

like i always say Bruce, 'you don't get to choose what makes your heart beat fast'.

i learned very early on in my own 400 adventure that these cars don't appeal to the masses in the same way a 308 does, which is something we're all familiar with.

Paul is obviously very different to the average guy out there where Ferrari's are concerned and i expect that he will appreciate the 400 series for what it offers...

but it's entirely possible that it just won't 'do it' for him...

I have to say Brett, I always hear that serious ones use these as their daily driver's & family excursions while keep the Boxers, GTO's, & the such for when they want to drive them....Ferrari 24/7 without expensing the dreampuffs. :D

Hey, I just tooks a looksy @ your profile and noticed (amount other stats) the custom gearbox manufacturing action. I hear too often of the lack of gearbox parts in our cars, how do you fare there??

I'm thinkin' grab the 2+2 & use the truck for major baggage. :D
    Love the BB!

Ferrari 24/7 except in winter is the idea. I would use the 400 or 365 as a daily driver and to travel up to the cottage with my family the other 3 seasons. Ive been debating getting a 68 road runner or charger for that duty and to scratch a different itch with a transmission that wont break when I beat it to death. Im leaning back to a 400 though. Keep the boxer for those times when I can get away for a blast on my own.

To take that last ? I had a little further, any interest in gearing up a GT box??

    You're talkin' my action.

Curious as to whether you'd consider remanufacturing syncros, gear sets, & the like for these 2+2's.

Thought about it, looked into it, big outlay to just look at stuff on my shelf and watch it trickle out. I would be better off making back windows for 400's.
