Well, insane as it sounded when I started nearly two years ago, my 400i daily driver (#049773) has performed flawlessly (except for the still to be resolved oil consumption, but it came that way). This past weekend I turned 50k miles, and I am looking forward to 60k in the near future. I tried to get a picture of the odo turning over, but it came out very blurry since the car was moving.

Overally, I can say driving a Ferrari every day, as a car, has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. I encourage every one to do it.

Peter - thanks for the kind words and good on you for putting 11k miles on your T-Coupe. I am actually surprised more people don't do this...

BTW, one of my greatest car memories is still watching you hustle that fiat-abarth spyder around that little track on the 1998 NE 1000.

That was so funny, Alex! My lady was watching from the sidelines and could not help but overhear another pair of ladies commenting on the proceedings...

Women #1: "How can he do that well in that little car?"

Women #2 (dismissively): " Oh, don't you know? He's a race car driver!"

Best story (for me) of the week. What a neat event. Hope to see you again up there or somewhere else.

    Best, Peter

    Way to go Alex!
Although I still think you're nuts to park it on the street in front of that fish market when you're too lazy to walk back from the garage.

I'd love to tell you I drive mine that much, but you know better.

Funny isn't it; most people don't know its true, you can have a big GT cruiser thats comfy yet still has the performance and style of an Ferrari.

    (how is the BB going?)

BB is going well. Bill Pollard - the Ferrari God - is putting the engine back together as we speak, and I have gotten all the glass back in and much of the trim on. Carpets are ready to go in as well. A new pic of the car (sans engine) in my garage is below.

The 400i actually turned 50k just before driving back into NYC from the country. Weather was good, though, so I did put it in the garage instead of leaving it on the street (I hate to walk back in the rain or snow). See the picture of it in its berth below just after passing 50k - note that apparently I am a "VIP". :)

    Al,
Even with the occasional quirk like the overheating problem, I'm so glad I went this way. You were the deciding factor in my choosing a 400i as my daily. I've been driving it since October and I love it. Thanks for clearing the path.

The BB looks like the body shell you get with one of those plastic kits. Great color.

    Thanks again.

Can you get regular driver insurance on the 400 series models?

Absolutely. Further, full coverage is cheaper on my 400i than it is on my wife's Audi allroad quattro.

    Alex

Who do you insure your 400 with?

Keep up the good work! I'll be getting my 400 back from Bill in the next day or so, and am very excited.

All the bad things I had read in the past had alway disswaded me from owning a 400. I always had this fantasy of finding a real nice one in need of alot of service and putting a corvette engine and trany in for 20 years. Driving it daily since its such a beautiful car to look at then put the v12 back in later when the market trippled.... Now I am rethinking that plan.. Great thread..JJ

Well - it ALREADY has a corvette tranny (GM TH400) from the factory. That said the V12 and the CIS injection system are both bullett proof, so why not just drive it for 20 years with the V12 in it? :) That is my plan...

I envy your ability to drive these cars as daily drivers. The price of fuel in the UK would make it prohibitive for me to drive my 400GT on a daily basis! It cost GBP100 to fill the tank and that'll take me just 230 miles... still, each mile is a pleasure.

    Regards, Ray.

That's why we've all chosen these cars! Love the conservative styling, comfort, and performance. Oh, and my 3yr old daughter loves all the horses...

42000 KM on the dial. NO problems whatsoever. (replaced starter, and just had the upper alternator rebuilt, but that's so easy it doesn't even count).

At 12 mpg, my GT4 isn't exacly sipping fuel either. And at $ 7.90 per gallon, I simply cannot afford to use her as my daily driver.

How about committing the cardinal sin of putting LPG in a 400i? That stuff costs about 1/3 of gas here, almost making a 400 affordable to run....

Get rid of the apartment and sleep in your plane hangar, Hans. Then you can run it as a daily driver because you keep the mileage down! Plenty of space to park both beauties there as well!

Running a Ferrari on Liquid Gas - there must be a special place in purgatory for people like you! :D:D:D

Oh, and Alexander: great stuff driving one of those daily! They're meant to be used. You have a BB as well - lucky man! Have loved that model since it came out when I was 4.

my 365 GT/4 has been a daily for over 20K miles. I agree, best idea is to just simply drive them. It's a joy everyday.

    additional note:
I always state fuel consumption at 5.5 gph. MPG is a metric that really does our cars a dis-service. My car burns just about the same in rush hour traffic as it does at 105 mph down the I-5. Anyways, it's s enough of a different spec. that it throws people off just a little, and you can turn the conversation back to concepts such as " MAN that really does sound great !!".
