I have been offered a complete V12 engine from a 400i. According to the vendor...

"engine has had a light electrical engine fire so basic engine will be ok - but most ancilleries will be damaged - ran fine before insurance claim"

He is asking £600 for it which seems reasonable to me? I am looking to either use the engine for a project that won't require it to be running, or to sell it on for a profit.

Sounds like a steal to me.
    I'd sure pay that.

    I thought so too.

Even if it is completely ruined mechanically, it could make a very nice planter for the front garden. :D

    Hmmm, not bad! :D

If you decide NOT to purcahse the engine, please let me know. In that case I'd be interested in picking it up!

    Thanks

    Hans

P.S. There are a few 12 cylinder 308 GTBs around.... should make a nice sound!!

    Seriously?

It might be tricky to get a 4 cam engine in a 3x8 without a bit of streching. The v12 car in the article had 2 cam heads installed because it narrowed things quite a bit (intake ports in the center).

It would be a fun project (just the kind I like to do) but this motor would be just a small part of the cost. Buying different heads and all the rest would likely be a real budget buster.

For 600 quid you should buy it. For that price you can clean it up and make a table out of it. No matter what you do there is really no down side.

    Great offer for 600quid!
I am contemplating using a couple of 400i engines for an offshore power boat I am designing as they are easy to marinise and superb engines for the job.

You are quite right, buying the engine is the easy bit!

If I was going to do it, I would get an engine transplant specialist to do the job, which would probably involve replacing the rear of the car with a spaceframe and a 308 GT4-esque rear clamshell.

The main problem (other than getting the engine running) would be a suitable transmission?

    Zertec,

Unless you are running in freshwater, I would advise against using aluminum blocks in marne applications - they will not hold up.

No problem in salt as the plan is to use a closed FW system with fw/sw heat exchangers.

Well I bought the engine...didn't look too badly burned.

Paint still on the oil filters. Wiring a mess..

When I was looking for my 400i in 1998, one of the cars that I inspected was a 400i in Reno, Nevada that had a completely rebuilt engine in it using the block from a 412. The used block alone cost $6,500 and the cost of the complete rebuild was $25,000.

    I'd say "very well bought!"

Yeah, good for you on the find - post a picture.

Clive - cool idea - something I've wanted to do for a long time (except single inboard ferrari v12).

you could build a motorcycle with the motor; it'd be the Itallian version of the "Boss Hoss".
    "Capo di Cavallino"?

I think this was a great buy! If nothing else, you could clean it up, check for running condition and sell it for $5000 quid or more...

Or you could build one awesome car with the engine :D

Final update for future reference, I bought this engine in March 2007 for £600 (including delivery!) and sold for £1200 in July 2007 (buyer collected).

I am sure in years to come this will seem like I sold too cheap, but it helped pay for an engagement ring at the time!
