Hi all, I have a Ferrari 400i 1983 and am looking at replacing the back sections of the twin exhaust. I have sourced what i think is a match but is for a 412. This part of the exhaust bends around and under the rear suspension arms so has to be spot on as the clearance is about an inch. From memory the difference between the 400i and 412 was interior and larger engine capacity only and the running gear and hence exhaust dimensions/bends are the same? Please advise if you know.

Also do you know if you have to dissasemble the rear suspension to fix the rear exhaust section? Looking at it I cant tell whether it will thread out/in?

PS I know some of you guys have fitted stainless steel exhausts to your 400's Did you get them made or is someone producing stock items advice on prices paid would help

Thanks in advance - Oh and a picture for you!

That is a beautiful car. As far as I know, a 412 exhaust should fit a 400. Exhausts are very expensive - I've heard bad things about th fit of Stebro exhausts; Tubi are expensive but fit well; mine was made by TimeValve in Connecticut, but I think they'd want your car in the metal to fabricate/fit the exhaust. I'm guessing you're in the UK (why not fill in some more information in your profile), so the last option is probably not feasible.

I have a 400i (1982) and need to replace the exhaust as well. It looks as if I need to replace the front, center and rear sections. Previous discussions in this chat recommended to use stainless steel ones if you can live with the fact that stainless steel exhausts are not original.
The conclusion seemed to be that stainless steel exhaust come with a price tag but they last a lot longer.

So I made some inquiries. I am in Europe (ca is in germany currently). Stebro made me an offer of 3900 $ US including shipping to a german airport of my choice.
That seemed fair for all three sections on both sides give the current US $ to Euro rate.

I haven't heard about bad fitting. Does anyone have a Stebro exhaust system mounted and can share his experience?

    Thanks Kai

You could check if the exhausts are the same by looking at the part numbers in the parts book for the 400 and 412
    How ?
Through the classic parts section of the Ferrari Owners site ( registration required) - the part numbers and diagrams are all there
    or
    by searching the following website
    http://www.eurospares.co.uk/index.asp
They appear to have the same parts diagrams, and prices as the ferrari classic parts site.

    Regards
    Michael

For those of you who have new(er) exhausts fitted can you tell me did they have to disconnect the rear suspension on the 400 to fit. Or does it thead through??

Hi the car is Grigorio Silver, Satin Black Trim, With Two tone Blue Leather Interior. Its the 3 Speed Gm Auto. Car is running great at the moment done 3 500 mls this year using it as a daily driver until bad weather sets in. The exhaust isnt too bad but iv used 'liquid steel' to repair pin holes between the back box and rear muffler - this is the pipe that threads underneath the back suspension hence my request for others experience.

Some more pics to keep the interest in the thread going for my Exhaust project
