Whats the best way to free up the heater controls as they are not movable and I don't want to do more damage as at least they are stuck in the A/C mode which is great for summer but on cool nights would love to get some heat

There are two or maybe three possible issues preventing control movement:
    - water valve stuck
    - cable seized
    - console lever issue (least likely)

The water valves are on the drivers side under the cowl behind the wiper arms. Apply some WD-40 or similar and see if you can stroke the valve by hand or with a small vice grip. If is does not move (mine did) disconnect the cable and try again. This will clearly tell you if it is a cable issue or valve.

If it is the valve let a good penetrating lubricant (WD-40 is neither) soak overnight and try the valve again. I believe valves are replaceable and used by Fiat and Alfa. So if you overdo the leverage there are parts available.

If is is the cable, use liquid graphite "Cable Ease" or similar on both end. Front end should allow liquid to flow to console once it gets inside sheath. It will take time, maybe days.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.
