    What should an 84 400i auto idle at in park and neutral allowing for the Rev drop when put into drive.

    Your OM specifies 1000 +/- 100 RPM for warm idle -- see Section 1 (but the dash tach gauge is sometimes not so accurate so better to use some other method).

    Also, be sure it does not install when AC is turned on.
