400i Motor complete

There was a 400i motor including all fuel injection system for sale on Ebay. It went to $5500 and did not reach reserve. I contacted the seller and his reserve is 11k or near offer. I have his email address if anyone is interested.

Any information on the state of the engine, miles, is it revised?

 

"I purchased the motor from a breakers yard in the UK the mileage was stated at 48,000 but the breaker would not guarantee it. However I replaced the cracked timimg chest and checked cams and crank which are in exellent condition which would indicate a low mileage car. Sorry I do not have any history or the performance data you require,"

Cracked timing chest!!?? Accident damage?

I did get an email from the seller suggesting he wanted $11,000.00 for the motor. He comment was "I sold another V-12 for 11 grand a few months ago".

It was very clean in the ebay pictures but as with any used motor of questionable background you are buying a pig and a poke.......................... My thought is when I saw it on ebay it was at $3300 that was about what it was worth, then it went up to $5500 and died. I think 11 grand is way over the top. I only was interested as a spare,so my interest at $5500 and up was greatly deminished.

The broken timing cover is an almost sure sign of crash damage. Ostensibly it was running well enough to BE crashed. Mileage claims from a wrecker are worthless but even low mile engines can have troubles.
Even considering the engine a core I'd say it was well bought.
My bet is with the timing cover repaired it will be fine.
