I need to replace the electric radiator fans on my 400iA. Has anyone done this? If so, are you aware of a suitable replacement for the initial fans fitted? Thanks.
Hi, The car sometimes runs hot when climbing hills and I discovered that the Right hand electric radiator fan is seized. I thought that this may be influencing the overheating problems and have removed the OEM fan to replace it. I have also discovered that the Left hand fan isnt too good either so I thought might upgrade/replace both fans. Cheers !
Hello I have fixed these before by replacing the bushes using old bushes from a hoover or such like it is a little time consuming but possible, The car doesnt need extra or upgraded cooling as it was designed seems to work fine for me anyway as I have given it plenty of abuse and never had any issue including stuck in traffic jams for long times etc. 'Superformance' have the replacement fans cant remember the price but I have also replaced and they work perfectly well. Regards Alastair
Thank you Alastair, I also thought about just replacing the internal bearings but time is the enemy !! I will check out the replacement 12v electric fans at the local autoparts suppliers. Cheers!
Having owned and ope rated my 1980 400i in Florida for about fifteen years, I have some thought on this. first..if you have the old style long motor bodys..they are the same fans used it the Jag XKE's, and the bushings are very much available. If you want to replace the old motor, they are available at GRAINGERS..yup..same motor with better technology..However, if you want to update the fan system with more modern and more effective fans, SPAL and others make very nice replacements that draw way less amps with better fan blades...Also,go to the 308/328 forums, as the have tons of threads ad-nausium on the subject. I hope that this is of some value. Happy Trails. Jq.
A SPAL fan would be a good match for the fan pulling from behind the radiator. It should be easy to fit. My fans improved when I added local relays to each fan instead of bringing the power thru the XXXXXX fuse/relay panel. Ken
Thanks Ken, Dave and JQ, Excellent info and yes, very helpful. The fan I need to replace is a 'pusher' (in front of the radiator) and although it may be difficult to source, at least I know that it is similar to some of the earlier Jag units. Sounds like a good idea to fit the relays as well. Thanks for all the advice. Cheers! Piston. Broke
