Is there only one alternator (like the 400) or are two driving the meter?

My 81 has two, which I just had rebuilt. Around $125 each to rebuild.

Where does the gauge info come from, or does it avg. the outputs of the two? If an alt. becomes faulty, does the gauge have two lights (one for ea.) that would display which one is faulty, or is it process of elim.?

My car has two separate red alternator lights, one for each. There is no ammeter in the car.

Pretty sure mine was running on only one of the alternators for quite a while. When the working one crapped out, that's when the battery died, and I discovered both had to be rebuilt.
