The black selector bar on my 1980 400i has developed a tendency to stick in either the down (select mode) and also in the up (selected mode)..Before I take it to the tranny shop.. Does anyone know whether this is the spring within the console or external linkage on the tranny under the car..if it's inside I'll tackle it myself..all help and opinions welcommed and appreciated...thank you all in advance..Jacques...

The problem will be in the handle.

Does your handle move up and down?
There is a clamp that holds the handle tube in place. When the clamp loosens, the tube can move upward. At that point when you press the button, it doesn't go down far enough to release the latch. Try pushing down on the whole handle as you press the button.
