    Dear all,

The short hose from the water pump to the block on my 400i has finally fallen for age and I will ned to be replaced this week.

There is a very good thread discussing it the thread below but there is no reference to the hose dimensions. That would be very handy so I can get a new one before taking the car a part.

    https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/400i-water-pump-help.234070/

The plan is to follow the description from AgSilver further down in the thread, post #39.

If you do know the size and length of the hose please post here.

Would you suggest a silicon or a rubber hose

    Kind regards and thank you

That short hose was replaced on my 400 Auto, the replacement is a silicon hose 38mm diameter and 55mm long. I do not have a picture handy but I can get one later if required.

    Brilliant. Thank you.

A picture would be very helpful. Did you/they mount it with engine in like in the description? Difficult?

Now I just need to find a supplier that carry 38mm silicone hose nearby and swap it out and we are good to go again.

The weather is just fantastic so a convertible 400i fits the bill just perfect.

Attached a picture of the hose as mounted on the 400 Auto, I have requested a description of the "how to". Not a major work, it was done as part of a regular maintenance on the car. I will send the details later.

The supplier of the hose is a specialist in competition car preparation (near Lyon in France).

Consider buying from Dave Helms. He has all of the correct water and fuel hoses for these cars. Not cheap but top quality.

Could be, but I would try calling Ferrparts or another reputable Ferrari parts business rather than guessing, or getting something that doesnt look right.

I agree with cross-checking :), the Ferrparts website says it is for the carbureted BB's:

    https://ferrparts.com/parts/Ferrari/102791

I also checked Eurospares (says the same as Ferrparts) and Maranello Classic Parts (says all BB's). But none of these sites are relating this part to the 365/400i/412.

I sent an email to the eBay seller requesting clarification, I will report back when I receive the answer.

I just noticed that the eBay detailed description relates this part to the BB's:

You are bidding on a Ferrari : - Cooling Hose Pipe, #17, NEW and OEM, ; Part # 102791 ; Fits the following models : 365 GT4 BB, 512 BB (Carburetor), 512 BBi

You can search our Ebay Store Via Part # or Description, good luck

So there is no consistency between the title and the description of this entry.

    Good day Jean-Michel,

I think the Ebay item's title is incorrect, as if you look within the description it states:

Most likely the title was a carry over from another ad and used without looking past the "365" at the beginning.

    Cheers,

    Sam

Thanks Sam, yes, the eBay seller replied the title was wrong for some reason, now the title has changed to point to the BB's:

    https://www.ebay.fr/itm/121885603249?ul_noapp=true

The eBay seller sent an additional message about it:

"according to ferrari it superceeds and goes to the testarossa line as well"

It is good for every one that this ad came up in the discussion, it now has a more correct title

Here are the details transmitted by the garage which did the work:

The silicon hose was selected because it is more flexible and its wall is thinner (for equivalent specs) than the original, this is a must because the distance between the two tubes is only 8mm (if using the original untouched hose, it has to be an engine out procedure).

Count 8 to 10 hours work (sorry if I mentioned it was not major).

    1- car on a lift

    2- vidange the coolant

3- remove the items for better access: alternator, belts, even air filter box on the passenger side (if the car is injected, perhaps other items to remove for access)

4- cut the old hose and remove

5- grease the inside of the silicon hose (WD40 was used).

6- two persons involved one bellow the car for guiding the hose in and one above to hold it and prevent it from snapping out.

7- feed the hose through the long tube first, then let it go down on the short tube (easier said than done of course).

8- secure both ends of the hose with circlips as shown on the picture

    9- fill the coolant

10- mount the items of step 3-

    11- test

Thank you all very much for very valuable input. I do have the 38mm hose now and will get the car on jack stands on Sunday to see if I can get it changed and report back.

With all the input and priceless pictures I hope it will be smooth. Almost all the other hoses are changed for new ones.

    Have nice weekend.

I will also add a suggestion. When working on the front part of the engine/engine bay consider removing the hood. There are only 4 bolts that secure it to the hinges and the two struts. It is fairly light also.

    Hi,
I was planning to do it from under car. Is it easier from the top side?

Best of luck with this operation!

My understanding of step 6- is that the job was evaluated to require 2 persons. Due to space constraint coordinating 4 hands and arms from below the car inside a tight volume, it was decided to have one person below and one person above. The suggestion made by Ak Jim is very good, is is definitely worthwhile to have the bonnet/strut/marelli ignition out of the way for the person helping from above.

When I redid the A/C on my car I spent about an hour leaning way in the engine compartment working on the belts then it just kind of dawned on me, take the hood off. Much easier after that.

    Dear all,

Done! With the use of some strong language it’s done.

I have taken the liberty to update the description from above and the earlier thread with my findings. And I also want to give credit to all input received including procedure description from “AgSilver” and “rovexienus” as I would not have tried this without them.

Here is my “updated” procedure list.

1- Car on a lift or on jack stands in the front. (I did jack stands)

2- Safely drain the old coolant from the bottom of the radiator.

3- I did not remove any items from the top of the engine, all work was done from below and by myself.

(remove the items for better access: alternator, belts, even air filter box on the passenger side (if the car is injected, perhaps other items to remove for access)).

4- Remove the old clamps and cut the old hose on the side and remove.

5- The pipe ends will be dirty and need cleaning before fitting a new hose. I used a dull knife and some abrasive paper to clean the ends. Remember to cover the water pump end to avoid debris to fall in. I used duct tape to cover the hole.

5- Cut a new hose from rubber or silicone coolant hose. Diameter is 38mm and length is original 55mm. I cut a 68mm hose (reason see below) and used a rubber hose.

5- Grease the inside and one outer side of the hose. Some use WD40, some use silicone and I used dish-soap to “grease”.

6- When “greased” the new hose can be pushed up on to the upper (longer) tube with some force. I used a small piece of 12mm plywood on the hose end to even out the force over the entire hose when pushing so that the hose would not crumble. Place it so the greased outer side faces down to reduce friction.

7- Once the tube is well up on the long tube it stays there. At least mine did. I then used Ag Silvers method and with a side cutter (wire cutter or small tin snip) made 2 cuts exactly opposite each other on each side. These cuts can be anywhere from .5" to .75". I did 10mm.

(this deviates from original description as I did the cuts with the hose in place. It was very difficult to get the hose on with them done prior as the hose would then crumble under pressure)

8- Using a simple brake spring tool (or other non-sharp tool) work the flaps of the cut end of the hose around the other pipe.

    9. Adjust the position of the hose so that the cuts/slits are below the sealing bead of the hose, ie push it as low (towards the water pump) as it will go.

10- Secure both ends of the new hose with new clamps and make certain that the lower clamp is above the cut, which is no problem with a longer tube.

(I also changed the other coolant tubes to the radiator when I have all of it down. They are 40mm rubber coolant tubes)

    11- Re-fill the coolant

    12- Check for leaks
