I've had a few requests for 400i wiring diagrams. Knowing there were about 1300 400i cars produced between 1979 and 1983 vs about 500 carbed 400s and another 500 412s it makes sense to concentrate on the 400i for greatest benefit. Input?

In reading the posts in this area of F-chat, there was some mention of electrical differences from earlier to later cars. Any input here where those differences might exist? I have both 1979 and 1982 OM, which should I use?

To colorize these drawings (see http://www.ferrari308gtbi.com/Sample.php) is a sizable effort. Colorizing diagrams for the other cars took about 200 hours. These 12 cylinder sedans contain much more electrical stuff further exacerbating the time factor. If only the Ferrari factory would put me on retainer or bring suit against me to make the job worthwhile. But, seems like 1985 ended the era of unreadable diagrams placed in Owner's Manuals and this car is hopefully the last needing help.

    Comment?

    1979, but I'm totally biased. My car is a 1980 400i.

I think that the 412 wiring must be very similar to the series II 400i, except for the addition of power seats on the electrics side. So it really might be more useful to do the series I 400i as series II owners could use the 412 diagram (I presume it is available separately from the manual).

I'm in whichever you decide to do, thanks!

The 412 also has ABS so I'm not sure how much additional wiring that entails but it could end up being quite a bit different than the series 2 400i.

AFAIK, the main electrical differences between series 1 and series 2 are in the use of solenoids to actuate the hood, trunk and gas cap cover releases.

Either series 1 or series 2 would work although my thinking is that using the diagram with more wiring is better than the one with less.

The fact that I own a series 2 400i has absolutely nothing to do with this opinion! ;)

You are selling yours, so your opinion does not count.

I have done a lot of electrical work on 400/412. There are many small differences over the years. Also dual and single air. I always found the diagram in the brown 1985 400i owners manual to be a pretty good compromise and always figured out what I needed to. I used that one extensively.

I think the 412 is enough different that a seperate diagram is called for. The ignition is totally different and as was already mentioned there is the optional ABS, the electric seats etc. It really is a very different car electrically.

I just mailed Paul 308 a very enlarged set(2x3) of Series I wiring diagrams and wire color charts so that he can easily read them. I've been encouraging him to make us some diagrams, so keep encouraging him so that he can anticipate the amount of interest in making them for us.. I have been very much aided by his wonderful 308 diagrams as many of the systems are similar, but 400i specific diagrams that are printable/disposable when they are bent, torn and greasy would be a HUGE benefit.Yup. 1979 to 1982 = Series 1---use the '79 manual
    1983 to 1985 = Serries 2--use the '82 manual

FYI, I have the 291/83 wiring diagram manual & I find differences between it, the OM (250/82), & what I've discovered in my '83 Series 2 car...fwiw.

Thanks for the input, especially about 'series I and II'. I may try something I've not been able to accomplish before, that to do one basic diagram (ser I) but include changes for another (serII).

Incidentally, havent published it before, but my collection of pdf Owner's Manuals is at http://www.ferrari308gtbi.com/OM/
They have all been unlocked. You may not know that when generating a pdf, the author can lock out many functions. Features like adding notes may not be your thing, but copying images is a must. So when I can't copy the wiring diagram, I become upset, and most Ferrari OMs I've scrounged were locked, requiring a program like PDF Password Remover 3.0

Anyway...have at them - free download but they are over 100 pages, hence large, either 10Mb or 22Mb in size. I haven't yet found a source for newer 2000+ Ferrari OM. ??

I looked into this and all links to purchase the wiring diagrams anywhere do not work anymore. As Paul was already 82 3 years ago and his last posts are also 3 years old I hope he just retired. Can anyone please help with a colorized wiring diagram for a 400 gen2?
That would be great. Or if Paul can be still be reached contact data would be great.
    Thanks a lot

Unfortunately the diagram is for the original 400i, not gen2. I will dig into my archives to see what I've downloaded from his collection and will let you know.

Actually - that would be wonderful if you could share the Series 1 diagram, as that is pertinent to me. Thank you.
