40DCNF vs. 42DCNF

    I happened to acquire a set of three Weber 42DCNF carburetors from Maserati Merak. Is there an advantage, disadvantage, or is it a waste of time to install these a European Dino engine (chassis number 01458)? I know there would need to be some adjustments to optimize them for a 246 engine.

    I'm considering the same change but I have the smog gear to remove first. I'm in New Zealand at sea level. From what I understand unless you have an issue with your fuel or your at high altitude then you would probably see no discernible difference with a Euro engine. I would be very interested in other options as I'm just about to start my engine rebuild.

    I prepared a plug and play Carb set with intake manifold with 44 DCNF. These are much more difficult to find tan the 42 DCNF from some Maserati. To not modify the Inner Diameter on the cylinder heads, the channels in the intake manifold were drilled conical from 44 on the card side to 40 on the cylinder head port. Jet sizes etc. were up grated to the 2,4L V6.
    Final setting were planned with a Lambda sensor in the exhaust to find Lambda = 0,9 during high loads. Unfortunately I can not tell any result as since a long time not tested :-(
    As I remember right there was similar tuning from Superformance...

    With regards to more power,I had always understood that a larger carb only comes into effect once the smaller carb becomes inadequate. If this were to happen at say 6,000 rpm then up to those revs the larger carb would not give more power.

    High altitude? I live in the Carson Valley in Nevada that is 4800 feet above sea level.

    I suggest you read the Dino246.com blog site they explain much better than I can about the importance of correct tuning and especially jet sizes for our various modern fuels. At your altitude you may well be loosing some power. Unless you head up high into the mountains on a regular basis and find noticeable losses and as long as yours starts well cold or hot, I think the work required might not yield enough change to make all that work worthwhile. I do suggest you jet the carb's as they recommend for your fuel and consider putting on a dyno for an hour with someone who understands these. That will maximise what you already have to work with. The Dino is still my favourite car but no where near as fast as a modern one!
