Hi all...I'm curious...does anyone know what interchange or original part replaces the kickdown switch that lives under the throttle linkage in the engine compartment? We were on one of the Vintage Rallies New England 1000 tours last week and on day two (of four) the trannie started to shift down from top gear all by itself.... I disconnected the kickdown ...problem solved but now I need a new switch...HELP. BTW...the rally was a blast...we were one of only three cars to Zero all four days....Great Navigator...Thanks, Marc

1981 400i kick down switch failed by providing no kick down. Initially thought an adjustment would suffice/wrong. The roller supported lever that contacts item 6, 400i TABLE 12 - THROTTLES CONTROLS (FOR LHD) was cock-eyed(canted) as it was installed in the switch itself. Solution, re-center fulcrum pin, perhaps stainless steel inside the switch which allows roller and arm to align properly. Said fulcrum pin located inside switch had slide out of its centering positon. Simply center it inside the switch housing with a tooth pick and check movement and contact, then reinstall switch. Helps a lot to remove swith and wiring first.

This is a very common switch.. It is is called a linear spring arm switch..$10 to $15 bucks..Let me know if you can't locate one. They come in various arm lengths and roller configurations.

More on the switch...More accurately called a snap action switch..go to ITC Electronics .com and see them. The ones that I have bought are made by PHILMORE. Like I said previously, they are common and inexpensive. If you must have the horsie on the box, I can find and old yellow box, and sell you one, for say, $250USD..mon ami...I hope this helps. Marcel..Go to my last post, and see the web site that I referred to..ITC Electronics.com. They come wrapped in clear plastic, and not the yellow "horsie" box. Much cheaper than my yellow box. PM me if you can't find it. Next...Jacques.
