412 seat tracks

Have often thought about doing the same, I could use the extra legroom. 400i & 412 tracks look & appear to be fastened similarly (allen screw front & rear of ea. track). The trick would be to get some add'l. nuts under the fiberglass floor to fasten to.

 

Just having remanufactured my seat tracks when I refinished my interior, I did mount the drivers seat aft some.

While I had the car up on my hoist I determined that it was possible to redrill bolt holes and move the drivers seat rearward. I drilled new holes and then used a longer Allen head cap screw down thru the track and thru the floor pan. I used longer bolts, large fender washers and a self locking nuts. Note that you will have to machine the heads down some for the sliding part of the seat track to clear the head of the cap screw. This job is nearly impossible with out a hoist.

Most Allen head cap screws are at least grade 5 and you can get up to grade 8 which I used, necesitating the need to use a tool post grinder to reduce the hight of the head for clearence.

Now while you have the seats out and apart, I would strongly suggest you check the raceways and the balls in the seat slides. Mine were missing balls, some balls ground up and the ball raceways were worn and bent. See my post on what I did to bring the seat tracks back into easy sliding condition.

You can also swap the seat cushions from side to side which I did.The passengers side seat had far less wear than the drivers side. By changing over the seat hinges you can make this change and get far longer wear from the seat parts.
