The speedometer and tripmeter on my 1988 412 quit working the other day. Found nothing in the spareparts catalogue, nor in the shop manual. Someone said it's electronic and not mechanical, but still, how does one repair it, and what can be repaired/ replaced?

Yes, it is electronic since my '84 400i already was. (My tripmeter is manual.

Only solution, pack it up and send it to Palo Alto Speedo. I think you will get other similar responses. It is easy to remove from the dash with the one knob on the face.

What I would like to know is the cause for this failure. I believe the instruments receive a signal, probably from the transmission, this signal generator could be faulty, but where is it situated?

Check at the drive shaft end of the transmission!
If both, speed indication and mileage counter have stopped to work, the problem is most likely somwhere in the electrical signal transfer from the sensor to the instrument or the sensor itself.
