Did any of the 412 model years have tilt steering of any kind...?
I am not sure about the 412, but on my 400i, If you remove the trim under the steering wheel, some degree of tilt is adjustable by loosening 1 or 2 bolts and tilting the wheel to a set position. good Luck, tony
Doesn't sound much like a "tilt wheel" to me. After you have loosened the bolts, is there anything locking the wheel into its new position or is it just dangling there? There is nothing in the owners manual about that feature. John
John... I checked a 412 owners manual, but to no avail... There is no mention of any sort of button or switch or lever that would adjust the steering wheel...
We've got an 87 412 in at the moment so I checked there isn't a tilt mechanism, the bolts being refered to are the mounting bolts that hold the steering coloum onto the firewall, as has already been posted they can be slackened off a bit to give you a few mill's of adjustment (before being tightend up in the new position)
When I first sat in my 400i my first inclination was to adjust the tilt wheel.... but, alas, it doesn't adjust. Are we all spoiled by the standard conveniences of our modern everyday drivers? I've since gotten used to the wheel on my 400i. (sorry, but I cannot comment directly on the 412)
Resurrecting this thread, I have tried to move my steering wheel in my '85 412 all the way up but it still covers the gauges. The top rim of the steering wheel is even with the top of the gauge cluster binnacle. Any advice?
The 400 had more simple seats, with less stuff cramed under, so did offer a better line of sight to the upper side of the gauges. Maybe you could lower the seat? On the 400 I had some sort of spacers that raised the seats.
Did you loosen both bolts #33 (there's only one shown in the SPC figure, but there are two) and nut #39 here: https://www.ferrariparts.co.uk/diagram/ferrari/412/046-steering-column The splined squeeze joint held by nut #39 has to slide to change the length to allow the full range of tilt adjustment available (when bolts #33 are loose).
It should just be there under the dash inside the passenger compartment -- follow the steering column shaft. (Item 17 is where the steering shaft goes from inside the passenger compartment to under the bonnet.)
On my car, between the seats and the frame there were some 2cm tubes that were used as spaces in order to clear the carpets and the plastic trims. On the driver side no such spacers. I presume the previous tall owner had removed these?
I'm 2m (6'7") tall, and I have seat rail extensions (about 6cm) and a steering column (2cm) fitted, which makes the driving position much better! Cheers Esben
You don't happen to have pictures of your rail extensions you made do you? Or did you buy them somewhere or... ?
I did actually buy them from Ferrari parts guy here in Germany, but they'd be very easy to replicate. If you're not in a hurry, I'll take the seat out and take some pictures. Esben
Not really in a hurry, no. But if there were some available I would pick some up for myself. I'm only 6'3", but I could use a wee bit more room. If I have to fabricate them, it goes WAY down on the priority list. ha ha.
