Here are the numbers off that website. I have heard 3800 Spyders of all versions were made. These numbers are not that far off that. Spyder manuals are rare indeed with only 574 listed as being made, wich is close to my guess based on U.S. Maserati 4200 overall dealer numbers. I think a large part of the production Spyders were sent to the US/NA, I would guess over 75%. The Gran Sport Spyder Cambiocorse is even rarer.

By the way, if you compare production numbers they made less 4200's then of either the Ferrari 360 or 430!!! I guess the ones to buy for rarity are the Gran Sport Spyder Cambiocorsa or 4200 Spyder Manual. Both are very rare and good looking beasts.

The one I think will be most desirable is the 3200GT with the great boomerang rear lights, air wents in the hood etc. This car was not the best build car, but very important in the change from biturbo era cars toward more exclusive looking cars. A lot of the 3200s are scrapped/crashed or simply outworn. This makes good examples even more rare and classy as time goes by!

The 3200's are nice, but they were not imported to North America officially and they are not available as a Spyder. Although the coupes may have better handling and less flex most have to admit the 4200 Spyders are amazing looking cars. Ferrari should have made it for themselves. Plus Spyders are a lot rarer than 3200 and 4200 coupes. And judging by the amount of parts cars I have seen Spyders were driven and also scrapped.

I had a 4200 for 12 years and it was really reliable (albeit I only drove it 18,000 miles). I had a friend in Hong Kong who had a 3200 and it was probably the most unreliable car of all time.

Agree... Ferrari is in one way a better build car and faster, but quite impractical and not city-trafficking-friendly in comparison. The end result is that a 3200/4200 type of car gives more houres of enjoyment for a smaller price. I am looking at a 4200 coupe these days. Might weld in those double boomerangs... I have seen a Spyder with those retrofitted. Would that increase or decrease the value of the car..? Sorry for "hijacking" the thread, but a 3200/Coupe GT/Spyder GT forum would be fun as these cars are fast and exotic for the money and offer more practicality than their 456/550/575 brothers.

Thor reason why I like 4200 over the GranSport is that the interior looks better without the synthetic fabric and old style heat/ac buttons like on the 3200.... The 4200 has a screen with navigation (probably really bad though), but has also phone/climate climate control etc. which makes the car feel a bit more modern. It also has (optional) cruise control which the 3200 has not. And cruise is mandatory here with the hard-to-understand low speed limits.

If its a CC it could be a lot of things. If its a manual I would check the clutch pedal pump and then the clutch itself depending on the miles. On the manuals the clutch life is very long from what I hear(mine only has 14,000 miles so I don't know). On the CC it can go in 25,000 miles. If it's a CC start with, fluid level, pump activation frequency and clutch wear along with the actuators and sensor.

One other thing, if it is a GT 6 speed this could be the shifter micro switch as they go out($56.00 part from Maserati). The only issues I have had with my 6 speed manual is the clutch pump($300.00 part from Maserati) and micro switch, although the old one started working after I pulled on the wiring. Continental Autosports had them both in stock!!!!
They also had a 6 speed manual clutch and throw out bearing in stock so I bought that also. From what I hear I wont need it on my manual for many miles :) I cannot stress more to people looking at buying a 4200, buy a MANUAL GT Spyder or coupe. The CC is more trouble than it is worth, unless you like changing your clutch every 20,000 miles. The GT manuals have been known to go over 100,000 miles on the original clutch.

Good info Tommy! I own a 02 Coupe GT (93k miles). Clutch was just replaced at the 92k mark, $3200 parts and labor through local indy mechanic. I was previously having trouble going into reverse but after replacing the clutch its gone away. Every now and then it gives me a hard time but its only on the first engagement, once I attempt a 2nd time it goes in smoothly without much effort. If it gives me more issues i'll have him look into and replace the micro switch and clutch pump.
