Here goes the start of another major project, timeline is probably a few years and at the moment the plan is to build an accurrate period replica in terms of looks and some of the features. Plan is to have a higher perfoming road car, with major weight loss and improved safety compared to a standard car.

Teardown of the car has started with work on the front end first, aim is to try and get the whole front clip off by the end of this week!

Fun project! Some rust on that bugger...how bad is it? Just surface rust or will any parts need to be replaced?

Mainly surface and most of what is affected is being cut out anyway as part of the chassis mods. The front spoiler was a real pain to remove the flanges had been well glued as well as the bolts!

Ahhhh...always fun finding those surprises from past people and wondering what the hell they were thinking... : )

Slightly ahead here - but what wheels are you putting on it? : D

Coffin spoke but I am tempted to use the Listerbell 16" frt and 17" rears simply to use modern tyres and again a nod to more modern parts brembo calipers. These will probably be the only major deviations in the build.

    Sp1der-

Epic project. All props to you (in advance). I recently sold my S1 Elise 190 Motorsport which was easily the best track car ever. Locked diff notwithstanding. Relatively small (15" wheels) unsprung mass. Like an early 911 or 308. Quick and nimble.

It's been said one builds a car around the wheels/tires.
If you're going to go big with rolling stock, are you planning to have BHP to warrant big rubber and flares? If not, have you considered a Micholetto- inspired narrow body? Smaller hole through the air. Air resistance being the square of velocity.

    My 2p.

Looking forward to following your project.

    Cheers,
    Matthew

    YESSSSSS!

    NOOOOOOO!!!!!

Seriously - I hear you on the ability to use modern rubber. My God what a difference it makes.

    Can't wait to follow this.

They are 355 calipers and discs and fit within the 16" wheels, but a small spacer is required. I will be changing to 2 piece discs but retain the calipers so the spacer will go.

That's going to be great Simon, and looking forward to seeing updates on your project!

I've long thought a street version of that style 308 would be very cool to own, an ultra light body, deep spoiler, rosso corsa with gold wheels, done implementing some improvements along the lines of the Singer 911s

Here's a couple of photos that inspires! :)

The red car looks very similar to the one Foskers built in the UK. The deep spoiler however will not feature as it is just too easy to ground and snag on things. The one I have just taken off has been repaired a lot of times as the car is quite low.

I have a set of those coffin wheels on the way. And I really like that Foskers build.

Are those the Listerbell wheels or the Hawk wheels you have on the way? Would be interested to know (if they are the Listerbell wheels) how they work out, quality, fit etc?

what did you do on the rears with the e-brake? i suppose if you were to do gr4 car now you can use a fly-off tpye in the hydralic lines

That VSOlioFiat car has my engine in it. At least, the short block dry-sump engine from car #21747.
It was built by MAT, and they purchased the motor from Eurospares. I had sold my wrecked car to them.

Standard rear calipers at the moment but also have some brembos for the rear with small piston sizes so brake balance is almost same as stock frt to rear. Can then use fly off hydraulic brake as suggested.
