    Is it possible to pull the head without pulling the engine?

    Unfortunately not... With the engine in the car, it is not possible to torque the heads properly, and actually would make the repair way more time consuming

    Acceptable leakdown on a good used engine is usually 10% or lower. Most new to almost new engines are 5% or lower. This car had (2)cylinders above 60% and all others above 10%.

    Can you post more photos of the valves and the seats that were the issue/had the 60% leakdown?

    Unfortunately the heads are already at the machine shop and are recieving a full valve job...sorry

    Amazing job once again from Universal Autosports.

    Quick questions: Were these heads completely overhauled during the previous rebuild ? If yes...
    - What air filter was ran on that car?
    - Are they regularly replaced/ serviced ?

    It is undeniable that Universal Autosports does maintain the cars under their care very well, but prior to that what was the maintenance history on this car?

    This kind of failure can be caused by foreign particle ingestion. (ie dust)

    Previous repairs on the valve seats could have being done improperly.

    What type off fuel quality is run on this car?

    Since this engine have already got a rebuilt history, what is the condition of the injectors?

    The engine has only 4,000 kms and has no signs of being apart or rebuilt in the past, and still has its factory seals. The air cleaners are new replacements provided by Capristo when the exhaust system was purchased, about 3 events old. The fuel that was used was either 93 or 95 unleaded..whichever was available at the track.

    All of our other cars are prepared and run the same way with no issues. There was signs of the intake valves leaving light markings on the pistons showing signs of contact.

    Remember that this could have being attributed to maintenance before you received the car for you continuing maintenance.

    Leaking intake valves are not an immediate failure .It happens over time .
    If you say that you see contact between valve and piston ,could this not point to timing .
    Question What was timing on this engine before disassemble.

    Even with new engines an assembly errors can occur.Were these valve springs checked for pretension and spring rate ?

    This can happen even to an engine with 100 miles

    Missed downshifts (overrevs) usually bent valves not burn them. The slapping of valves on the cylinder can be either the overrevs or a bad timing setup. Since they are burnt (excessive heat) I am going wuth the bad timing setup along with a combination of running bad (cheap) gas more than once which inturn usually causes the motor to run constantly hot.

    Great thread. If I am not mistaken that car was a casualty at Monticello last year.
