Having never used CST mode, I am planning on giving it a shot (with lots of room around me on all sides). Before I test this out, I would love to hear stories of anyone who has driven in CST mode, on or off the track.

I would love to hear your stories.

I did it once to see how it felt to have all the modern driver aids off........It's a different animal and NOT recommended unless you are a very experienced driver. I can see why after testing it out. At slow speeds it's no big deal but hive t some juice and hit a turn too fast and things can quickly get out of control.
I know my limits, so I keep it in Sport 95% of the tim and Race when Im feeling brave.

they said a few customers have done it and it did not work out well for them. so I pushed it once with the motor off and nothing happened. That's enough for me. Let us know what happens.

I have tried it on my car only in a straight line and it does feel less restrictive to rev compared to RACE. I liked it but too risky on public roads if your pushing it in turns!

If you do take it off I suggest on the track only with plenty of run off room just in case :)

CST off mode... no thanks. I'm not qualified to have 500HP of Ferrari under my right foot with all driver aids switched off. I've owned a three 911 Turbos (old school, rear-drive, trying to kill you models) and scared myself silly with these, not interested in doing that with my 430!!

Driving with CST off is like being on a ride at the amusement park with the bar up... it's just a matter of time before something bad happens.

While we're on the topic of traction control... I'd love to better understand the real differences between Sport and Race modes. I can feel/hear a difference in shifting, exhaust, suspension etc under normal driving... but if Sport has, say, 100% traction control and full ABS, what percentage of assist goes away in Race mode. I've seen the 5th Gear or Top Gear episode where Tiff has the 430 on the track at Ferrari showing how each setting performs differently going around one particular corner, but what about braking etc.

It would be cool to see a chart of some sort showing the different modes against degrees of assist from the car's electronics.

    Take care,

    Frank

Here's a VERY experienced Ferrari driving instructor driving with CST off...at the Ferrari driving experience..He is nicknamed "Drift King" at that track.

He makes it look easy -- Don't try this at home....

Great comments. I wonder if they have CST off when they do the test times in Road & Tack. I will let you know this afternoon's results.

The first thing I do when I get in the 360 is turn off the traction control... I am sure the T/C in the 430 kicks in later... I hope...

With the T/C on in the 360 it feels like you have 1/2 power on...The beauty of the newer systems is they give you more room before they engage...The GT3 hardly ever kicks in.. You don't even notice it unless it is very wet or you are on the track.

Nice video.. Looks alot like a daily drive in a 911

The new 911 PASM/ PSM systems that Porsche puts in the 997 are excellent as far as how much "slack" they give you before jumping in...much more driver oriented than say an M Bmw or an AMG benz, but the Porsche system is not as good as the Ferrari one.

Getting the tail out in my 997s ( on the track of course) - while very entertaining - is still far more "controlled" than what I get with the CST off in my 430.

Also, to truly experience what the CST does, I tried that course with it both on and off -- and with it on (ie. Race/sport mode), even in the wet it is VERY difficult to get the rear to break loose even at full throttle -- the system just tends to intervene more in other modes.

Also, another thing to remember if you are going to attempt what the Ferrari driving instructors do on the track, and you are using an F1 -- the car will likely stall after a spin with CST off, and you will need to wait to restart. (the F1 system tends to get confused by going into a spin / over enthusiastic drift )..This does not apply to a 3 pedal 6 speed.

I did the same thing in my 360. I hated it when the car would cut power... often at the wrong time, for example with the slightest amount of wheel spin when trying to pull out in traffic.

Traction control in my 430, even in Sport mode, hasn't jumped in yet... at least not that I've noticed.

I have had the T/C come on several times in Sport mode. It's always at the perfect time. It make me look like a MUCH better driver than I am.

I tested the car out with CST off. Acceleration feels identical as Race mode. I did not venture to drift quickly around a turn as I was not on a track. I did notice again that race mode has quicker acceleration over sport mode.
